CAFE Welcomes Dr. Alexis Petri as CAFE Director
| |
We are pleased to announce that Alexis Petri has been selected to serve as the Director of the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence, CAFE. Dr. Petri has been a key member of the CAFE leadership for the past three years, having served as a Pillar Lead since CAFE first launched in summer 2020, and most recently while also serving as the Director of the Office of Research Development, delivering signature programs “the Art of Grantsmanship” and “SOAR: Supporting our Academic Scholars” as CAFE/ORS collaborations. Dr. Petri brings over 20 years of experience in the areas of faculty support and professional learning. In addition to her impressive track record of extramural funding as an Associate Research Professor, she has also taught courses on the history of higher education in the Educational Leadership, Policy and Foundations program in the School of Education, Social Work, and Psychological Sciences where she also holds doctoral faculty status.
In collaboration with the CAFE leadership team and a soon-to-be-formed CAFE Advisory Board, the CAFE Director will play a central role in ensuring that CAFE programming continues to meet the needs of our faculty and support the university’s mission in delivering evidenced-based professional learning and resources that support effective teaching, research/creative success, career progression, and impactful service, engagement, and leadership.
Please join us in congratulating Alexis on her new role!

Faculty Writing Initiative Summer Retreat
Back by popular demand!
The Faculty Writing Initiative Summer Retreat will be held May 15-17, from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm at Newcomb Hall - Faculty Commons.
The summer writing retreat is a special extension of the highly successful Faculty Writing Initiative, which has just completed its seventh semester. Following the same philosophy of FWI, over the course of three days the retreat will offer 20 faculty from across all ranks and disciplines structured writing time to make progress on writing projects. Each day begins with goal setting and ends with progress check-ins. Discussions about writing strategies bring structure and a sense of community to the solitary work of writing.
Co-facilitators will invite guests with expertise in topics of interest to participants to lead lunch-and-learn workshops. Applicants are asked to indicate what topics they would like to learn more about when they register!
Engage colleagues in ways that provide support and caring for writing anxiety or jitters and also spark creativity and a sense of playfulness. Gain a sense of camaraderie by writing in a group environment. The FWI Summer Retreat helps faculty build writing time consistently into their schedules. The FWI Summer Retreat encourages each other in building a writing practice, instead of reading and responding to writing.
Interested? Complete an online application by Friday, April 12, 2024. The FWI will select faculty to ensure that the initiative serves writers from all disciplines and across all ranks in the university.
If you have any questions, please email Dr. Byrd (antoniobyrd@umkc.edu) or Dr. Greer (greerj@umkc.edu).
