Creating a healthier workplace also means improving how we work, and our workplace efficiency initiatives are designed to improve workflows, streamline everyday processes, and help faculty spend more time on the work that matters most.

The Department of Medicine Epic Coordinating Committee is a cross-divisional work group focused on improving how the Department uses Epic to support patient care, clinician efficiency, and operational effectiveness. They systematically review and manage Epic optimization requests to improve quality and efficiency for clinicians and patients.

Epic Training & Onboarding Support

The primary goal of the WashU Clinical Assistance Team (WUCAT) is to help providers and support staff feel confident, efficient, and successful when using the EMR. They offer a variety of services designed to enhance workflows, improve user experience, and support day-to-day clinical operations, including:

Specialty Sprints

The Department of Medicine’s Specialty Sprint program provides focused Epic support and education at the division level. The team works closely with providers in a specific division over a few weeks, identifies where Epic is creating unnecessary work, and helps providers make better use of the tools already available to them through personalization sessions, clinic support, and targeted education. Some of the common areas of optimization are:

Abridge

Abridge is an ambient AI documentation tool designed to reduce administrative burden and help clinicians spend more time focused on their patients. The implementation effort includes ongoing measurement, feedback from clinicians, and continuous improvement to ensure the technology delivers meaningful value in daily practice. Feedback from users has been very positive.  

Abridge representatives visit the BJC HealthCare and WashU Medicine campuses on a quarterly basis. Physicians and staff who want to learn more about using the ambient AI platform, attend a demonstration, or speak with clinical leaders can receive updates on upcoming campus visits by completing an online form

Dr. Eberechi Nwogu-Onyemkpas is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Palliative Medicine, with expertise in palliative care integration for advanced heart failure and sickle cell disease. She recently joined the Well-Being Council, where she looks forward to collaborating with colleagues across the Department of Medicine to support faculty and staff well-being.

Outside of work, Dr. Nwogu-Onyemkpas’s favorite personal wellness activity includes a spa day with a manicure/pedicure.  Additionally, she enjoys watching crime investigation series on Netflix. Spirituality is an important part of Dr. Nwogu-Onyemkpas’s life, and she attends church weekly. She also cherishes hugs and cuddles with her three children.

Registration for this Fall's Wellness Challenge opens Friday, September 11th.  Grab a colleague, friend, or your family and enjoy the fall weather and scenery while getting in your physical activity and working on your health and wellness!  Challenge starts September 21st and runs through November 1st.
