Appropriations, Coronavirus Relief, and Changes in Texas' Delegation

Although now in a lame duck session, the 116th Congress will attempt to deal with a handful of issues, the most important being the passing of a FY21 budget before the Continuing Resolution (CR) currently funding the government expires on December 11th. And while both Chambers appear interested in another coronavirus relief package, they remain almost $1.5 trillion apart, so an agreed upon package seems unlikely. Our delegation also has two outgoing Aggies, Bill Flores '76 and Will Hurd '99, both of whom have been staunch advocates for Texas A&M in Congress.

State Update

Joint Budget Hearing

On November 5th, CEOs and heads of state agencies and universities testified virtually at a Joint Budget Hearing for Higher Education regarding priorities for the 87th legislative session.
Texas A&M University, Texas A&M Health Science Center, and Texas A&M University at Galveston all receive separate appropriations from the State, with individual legislative priorities for each institution. A link to the Legislative Appropriations Request (LAR) that each institution submitted to the State in September is available below:
Government Relations has created also a reference packet (tx.ag/TAMU87TXLEGE) with information regarding Texas A&M's budget challenges and legislative priorities for the 87th session.
Government Relations officials at Texas A&M and UT-Austin developed a social media campaign entitled "UNITED TO SERVE TEXANS," to inform the public and elected officials regarding the combined statewide impacts of both institutions in advance of the start of the 87th Legislative Session on January 12th.
The campaign was an incredible success thanks to the support and collaboration with the Marketing and Communications' offices at each campus. The campaign had close to 400,000 impressions and many state legislators engaged with one or more of the posts.
