More than 60% of Florida residents are without power. Meanwhile, residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands feel ignored as relief efforts begin to trickle in. It may take years for the islands to recover, which could devastate the economy as they depend heavily on tourism. Back on the mainland, WaPo reports that the President and VP have not yet decided when they will sit for their official portraits. Hence, the spots which would normally hold their photos at federal agencies across the country have been empty for eight months. Gotta acknowledge the symbolism there. Speaking of 45, tonight he dines with Dems to talk tax reform and debt ceiling. Dems, listen up! If the President is wearing armor and locks the doors and soft music begins to play, get out! Have you seriously never witnessed the Red Wedding? Anywho, yesterday the Senate passed a resolution condemning white supremacist organizations and urging Trump to speak out against hate groups. Today, Apple unveils a new top-of-the-line iPhone that comes with facial recognition and a $1,000 price tag. We’re officially The Jetsons. (Google it, millennials). What else is coming out today? Hillary Clinton’s book. And what’s coming out right now? This:
  • Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) and the very NSFW tweet.
  • Barack Obama merges his legacies.
  • Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) will co-sponsor Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) Medicare for All Act.
  • WH CoS John Kelly calls out Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL).
  • Former staffer for Senator Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) testifies. See what he had to say.
  • Barack Obama and NFL’s Michael Bennett talk social justice.
  • Booker’s book is making bank.
  • Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) have a cafecito with Hill staffers.
  • Hispanic National Bar Association has a new national president.
  • Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) wants a FEMA report on climate change.
  • Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD) and a bicameral group of legislators question Trump’s use of the Secret Service.
  • Native American Journalists help newsrooms get it right with Bingo. Yes, Bingo.
  • AAPI candidates dominate today’s NYC primary.

Lin-Manuel Miranda Takes Over DC and Heads to Capitol Hill Today
The United States Capitol Historical Society today awards its 2017 Freedom Award to Tony and Pulitzer winner Lin-Manuel Miranda for “inspiring informed civic participation and achievement in advancing public understanding of our nation’s founding through Hamilton the Musical and the Hamilton Education Program.” The ceremony takes place tonight at 7P in Statuary Hall. For those keeping track, it’s nine months until “Hamilton” premieres onstage at the Kennedy Center. Anticipating the arrival, the Kennedy Center will present a concert version of “In the Heights” in March. Who’s got us on tickets? Hit us at info@TheBeatDC.com. Orchestra or box seats only, please. My Brother's Keeper Merges with Obama Foundation
Former President Barack Obama’s key signature program for at-risk young men of color -- spun off from his White House in 2015 as a nonprofit group, My Brother’s Keeper Alliance -- will merge with his Obama Foundation. The merger and the mission make sense for the foundation, headquartered in Hyde Park in Chicago’s Southside. MBK Alliance board members include John Rogers, the chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments, who is also on the Obama Foundation board; Broderick Johnson, Former Assistant to the President and Cabinet Secretary and MBK Alliance Board Chair; Robert Raben of The Raben Group; new Starbucks CEO Rosalind Brewer; and Arne Duncan, Obama’s former Education Secretary who last week was tapped to be the co-chair of the new, unnamed development organization created to leverage the economic impact of the Obama Center for its surrounding neighborhoods, among others. See full board here.

Ted Cruz, You Naughty Boy,  “Likes” Very NSFW Tweet
Late last night, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) liked a couple doing the naughty while a third woman stood by observing the scene. The former presidential hopeful’s “like” of the pretty graphic two-minute-long video from @SexuallPosts was then pushed out to some of his three million followers. The tweet was finally pulled down this morning. Some intern or a staffer will likely receive the blame for this. Mashable has a still of the video that was “liked,” And as much as The Beat DC wanted to use the image, our attorney advised against it. He didn’t say anything about linking to it though.
WH CoS Calls Out Luis Gutiérrez
In an email to Fox News late Sunday, WH CoS John Kelly responded to criticisms from Congressman Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) that Kelly was a “disgrace to the uniform,” among other comments, over Kelly’s advice to Donald Trump to rescind DACA. “As far as the congressman and other irresponsible members of congress are concerned, they have the luxury of saying what they want as they do nothing and have almost no responsibility,” Kelly said. “They can call people liars but it would be inappropriate for me to say the same thing back at them. As my blessed mother used to say ‘empty barrels make the most noise.’ ... The congressman has a right to his opinion.” More here.
Booker Will Co-Sponsor Sanders’ Medicare for All Act
On Monday, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) told New Jersey TV station NJTV News that he is co-sponsoring Senator Bernie Sanders’ (I-VT) single-payer healthcare bill known as ‘Medicare for All.’ Booker is not the only high-profile Democratic senator to announce his support for the plan. Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Kamala Harris (D-CA) have already announced they are co-sponsoring Sanders’ bill, and Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY)
also announced their support on Monday. “You should not be punished because you are working-class or poor and be denied health care. I think healthcare should be a right to all,” said Booker. “This is something that’s got to happen. Obamacare was a first step in advancing this country, but I won’t rest until every American has a basic security that comes with having access to affordable health care.” Watch his interview here.
Former Menéndez Aide Testifies Senator Helped Co-Defendant with Visas
On Monday, a former staffer for Senator Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) testified that the senator was personally involved in helping with the visa applications of friends of Dr. Salomón Melgen, a wealthy doctor who is on trial with him. Menéndez’s former Senior Policy Advisor Mark Lopes testified that the senator emailed him in 2008 authorizing a letter of support regarding the visa applications of two sisters from the Dominican Republic -- one of the emails had a subject line that read: “Dr. Melgen’s request.” When their applications were denied, Menéndez had Lopes contact the U.S. ambassador. The sisters were friends of Melgen, a longtime friend of Menéndez’s. Also on Monday, an American Express employee testified that Melgen used about 650,000 AmEx points to pay for a Paris hotel room for Menéndez in 2010. Melgen and Menéndez face multiple fraud and bribery charges. Get more here.

NFL Player Talking to Obama About Social Justice Issues
According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett has been in communication with former President Barack Obama regarding issues of social justice. Apparently, the lines of communication between the two have been open even before Bennett had his public run-in with Las Vegas police. Bennett said he was racially profiled and assaulted in an incident in August. The police department has since asked the NFL to investigate Bennett's allegations, but the league responded that there were no grounds for an investigation. More here.
Booker’s Book is Making Bank
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ)
received $325,000 in royalties in 2016 from his book, United, according to his most recent financial disclosure form. Lawmakers are required to disclose their personal finances annually. The senator had received $400,000 in royalties for the book in 2015. The book focuses on the lessons Booker learned as a community activist, Newark mayor, and then as a senator, and came out in 2016 amid rumors he was being considered as a potential running mate for Hillary Clinton. More here.
Catherine Cortez Masto and Kamala Harris Meet with Hill Staffers
Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)
hosted her third "Cafecito con Catherine" as part of her mentorship series to discuss challenges faced by minority congressional staffers, in an effort to improve and help advance their career opportunities. Cortez Masto was joined by Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) to meet with African American female staffers and hear their perspective and talk about their ideas. “I have always said that government should be as diverse as the people we represent, and one of the ways we can best emulate this principle is by making sure our congressional staffers are as diverse as the people we serve back home,” said Cortez Masto. “Our diversity is our strength and our power – it’s what makes America unique,” added Harris. In March and in May, Cortez Masto met with Latina Senate staffers and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) staffers respectively to highlight the need for succession planning by partnering with organizations to ensure women and students of color have access to internship and employment opportunities in Congress. Tina Tchen, Michelle Obama’s Chief of Staff, Back in Chicago Running Law Firm
Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s Chief of Staff, Tina Tchen, is now leading the Chicago office of the Buckley Sandler law firm. The 61-year-old served in the White House for six years and shifted gears after President Barack Obama left office. She hit the lecture circuit, went to Europe, and kept up her efforts to empower women and girls. When she was in the WH, she had led the now-dormant White House Council on Women and Girls. She's also an advisor to The United State of Women. Does she miss DC? “What I miss is, you can walk down the street in DC and every block or so, you'll run into somebody ... who's an economics expert or somebody who's an international law expert or someone who's doing (work on issues pertaining to) women and girls in Africa," she said. An Ohio native, Tchen graduated from Northwestern Law and is a former partner in the Chicago office of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. She was active on several boards, including the University of Chicago Medical Center and the Chicago Public Library. More here.

Raja Krishnamoorthi Wants a FEMA Report on Climate Change
On Monday, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) called upon FEMA to issue a report on any steps the organization is taking to help communities address the increased likelihood of severe weather through incorporating the impacts of climate change into its risk projections, including flood maps. “As our country recovers from the devastating human and material costs of the recent string of one-hundred-year floods and hurricanes, it is vital that government agencies, communities, and businesses have the best available risk assessments for future storms. To guarantee the quality of our weather projections, the impacts of climate change must be taken into account,” the Congressman said. Read the full letter here.
Cummings Questions President’s Use of Secret Service
Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), the Ranking Member on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, joined other lawmakers and sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Inspector General John Roth, requesting a full review of whether Secret Service costs and activities resulting from the Trump family’s use of multiple private properties is in compliance with the Presidential Protection Assistance Act of 1976, which governs the use of Secret Service resources to secure non-governmental properties. The Secret Service says that Trump designated Trump Tower as his one non-governmental property to be secured and that they planned to spend approximately $26 million to secure the property in 2017, and that the president identified his residences in Bedminster, NJ and Mar-a-Lago in Florida as additional non-governmental properties to be secured, subject to the $200,000 limit. The president has visited Mar-a-Lago 25 days and Bedminster 29 days in his first eight months in office. He has only visited Trump Tower three days in the same time period. The letter was also signed by Senators Tom Udall (D-NM), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Gary Peters (D-MI). Read it in full here.

Hispanic Journalists Study Critical of Latino News Coverage
According to a new study by retired professor and former National Association of Hispanic Journalists board member Federico Subervi, the coverage of Latinos has remained practically frozen in time or has worsened, which Subervi calls "a neglect of the coverage of the nation's largest ethnic minority population."
The study analyzed how the national television half-hour evening network news programs on ABC, CBS, NBC, and the one-hour evening news program on CNN covered Latinos and Latino issues in the years 2008-2014. The study cites that though Latinos represent a population of more than 54 million -- 17% of the U.S. national total -- stories about Latinos and Latino issues constitute about one percent of the news in the networks included in the story. Moreover, the study found that coverage continues to remain significantly focused on Latinos as people with problems or who cause problems. See the study here.
Native American Journalists Help Newsrooms with Bingo
Last week, the Native American Journalists Association (NAJA) issued a new tool for newsrooms covering indigenous communities: a Bingo board. Bingo: Reporting in Indian Country Edition was developed by NAJA in partnership with High Country News to bring attention to clichés and stereotypes that often appear in stories focused on tribal affairs in the United States. The Reporting in Indian Country Edition of Bingo is designed to catch overused and hackneyed ideas employed by newsrooms. The Bingo tiles include words, phrases, and ideas such as “Alcohol” and “Poverty,” as well as “Vanishing Culture” and “Dying Language." Like regular Bingo, every time one of these idea tiles appears in your story, you can mark your board. More marks may signal boilerplate storytelling or a lack of experience reporting on Indian Country. More here.

Mississippi Judge Asks SCOTUS to Consider Case Involving State Flag
Clarksdale, Mississippi Municipal Judge Carlos E. Moore is asking the Supreme Court to intervene in a lawsuit that says the state flag promotes white supremacy and violates the equal-protection rights of Black Mississippians. Moore has already removed the flag from his courtroom, telling the WaPo in an interview, “That flag — I do not believe it stands for justice. I did not want it standing behind me as I tried to administer justice.” He has faced death threats over the issue and his own lawyer acknowledges SCOTUS is likely not eager to join the debate over what to do about Confederate symbols. The state of Mississippi didn’t even bother to issue a response to Moore’s suit, but the nation’s highest court asked the state to file a brief as it wanted to know more about the issue. More here.
SCOTUS Temporarily Lifts Restrictions on Trump Travel Ban
The Supreme Court yesterday afternoon granted the Trump administration's request to temporarily lift restrictions on the president's travel ban. The court temporarily blocked part of a lower court ruling that had barred the government from prohibiting refugees from entering the United States if a resettlement agency in the U.S. had agreed to take them and they had no other connection to the United States. Justice Anthony Kennedy issued a brief order Monday that will keep the ruling on hold for the time being, at least until the ban’s challengers submit written arguments by midday today and the full court has a chance to act. The Supreme Court's decision came less than two hours after Acting Solicitor General Jeffrey Wall filed a request for a stay and does not affect the Hawaii federal judge’s ruling expanding the definition of bona fide relationships. California AG Becerra Sues Admin Over DACA
California AG Xavier Becerra announced on Monday that the state of California would file a lawsuit against the Trump administration for rescinding DACA. Maine, Minnesota, and Maryland joined the California lawsuit. CA decided to file a separate suit from the other 15 states plus DC that filed one last week, because California and its economy will be particularly hit hard by Trump’s action, as it is home to about 200,000 DACA recipients. “I think everyone recognizes the scope and breadth of the Trump decision to terminate DACA hits hardest here,” Becerra said. “It’s fully lawful, it’s totally American in its values and it’s an unmitigated success for California’s economy and the country’s economy.” The LA Times has more here.
AAPI Candidates Dominate Today’s NYC Primary
Today, New Yorkers head to the polls for their primary election. Among the candidates battling for seats in some of NYC's 51 council districts is a crowded field of Asian Americans. Currently, the NYC Council has just two Asian American members: Margaret Chin of Manhattan (pictured), and Peter Koo of Queens (pictured). Both face challenges this year. Koo, a Republican-turned-Democrat two-term incumbent, is facing Alison Tan (pictured), a former managing director of a real estate financing company and the wife of NY’s first Korean American State Assemblyman, Democrat Ron Kim. Chin is fending off challenges from three candidates in the 1st Council District’s Democratic primary. In Manhattan’s 2nd Council District, which covers an eastern section of Lower Manhattan, Korean American Ronnie Cho (pictured), a Barack Obama alum, is one of six Dems hoping to replace Council Member Rosie Méndez, who cannot run again because of term limits. Nancy Tong, a Community Relations Director who works at an Assemblyman’s office, is facing a crowded field in her primary for an open seat in Brooklyn’s 43rd Council District. Also eyeing that seat is Democrat Rev. Khader El-Yateem, who could become the first Arab American and Palestinian American to serve in NYC’s City Council. And this isn’t even everybody! TPS Could Be Next on the Trump Agenda
While DACA supporters push for Congress to pass DREAM Act legislation to protect more than 800,00 DACA recipients and other undocumented immigrants from deportation, the Trump administration could be looking at whether to continue Temporary Protected Status, another program benefitting groups of immigrants from certain countries who have been in the United States fleeing natural disasters, civil wars, and other “extraordinary and temporary conditions.” More than 440,000 are living in the United States under TPS, some for as long as 20 years. The Trump administration is expected within the next six months to weigh in on renewing the TPS status for people from Sudan, South Sudan, Honduras, and Nicaragua. More here from CNN.
Pope Wants Trump to Reconsider DACA Decision
Pope Francis is slamming Trump for his decision to end the DACA program, saying if the president considers himself “pro-life” he should reconsider his decision. "The President of the United States presents himself as pro-life and if he is a good pro-lifer, he understands that family is the cradle of life and its unity must be protected," Pope Francis said on Sunday during a news conference with reporters aboard the papal plane, where he was returning to Italy after a five-day trip to Colombia. The Pope acknowledged that he was not familiar with the specifics of DACA. "I think this law comes not from parliament but from the executive," the Pope said. "If that is so, I am hopeful that it will be re-thought." The Pope has criticized Trump before on immigration, saying it is “not Christian” to build walls. More here.
Bennie Thompson Releases DHS Report
Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, commemorated the sixteenth anniversary of the September 11th attacks by releasing a detailed review of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) progress at meeting critical homeland security mandates. This staff report analyzes the status of DHS efforts regarding ten of the most prominent mandates in the 9/11 Commission Act, and provides recommendations for moving forward. “America is far better equipped today than it was on September 11, 2001, to prepare for, prevent, and respond to acts of terrorism and other catastrophic events,” the report read. “Still, we must stay vigilant and fully-engaged with homeland security partners to effectively address the range of threats that, in addition to traditional terrorist threats, today include cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure and violence by neo-Nazi, white supremacist, and other domestic terror groups.” See the full report here.
