Getting Down to Business - Entrepreneurial Style
The Schulich entrepreneurial community is thriving and delivering lots of new opportunity for engagement. This past month the Schulich entrepreneurial ecosystem had a boom of activity:
Schulich Entrepreneurship Alumni Association (SEAA) - Idea Jam
Our newest alumni chapter, SEAA, headed by Vito Giovannetti (BBA ’14), is focused on giving early-stage and aspiring Schulich Entrepreneurs the opportunity to come together and share and receive feedback on their ideas and concepts with monthly Idea Jams. Stay tuned for more great programming from SEAA.
Schulich StartUp Night
The 10th edition of the growing Schulich StartUp Night on November 8 was an incredible demonstration of the talent in our alumni and student entrepreneurial community. Taking first place in the Alumni category was Vasiliki Belegrinis (BBA ’18) with her startup Lend & Wear. In the Student category was Giancarlo Sessa (BBA ‘19) and Aedan Fida (BBA ’19), Co-Founders of Blade Filters Inc. Taking home Lassonde's BEST Award for most impactful technology was Ali Khalili (MBA '16) with his startup Ashna Solutions.
DREAM TEAM
Students are in on the action with a monthly meetup co-hosted by Schulich Ventures Club, Schulich StartUps, and Lassonde’s BEST Lab. Known as the DREAM TEAM, this series helps aspiring entrepreneurs connect with others who can help bring their idea to life. At the recent meetup on November 22, Ron Sidon (MBA '68) shared his latest idea and experience as an entrepreneur.

President Rhonda L. Lenton and Dean Horváth visit Alumni in India

In early November, President Rhonda L. Lenton and Dean Horváth, visited with alumni in India at two Presidential Receptions. The delegation was in New Delhi on November 1 and Mumbai on November 4.  Alumni in both cities were delighted to hear the latest updates from the President and the Dean and enjoyed learning more about current initiatives and future plans for both the School and the University.

Schulich Alumni Head Back to Campus for the Annual GBC Insights

On November 2 alumni returned to their alma mater to share their professional experience with Master’s students at the annual GBC Insights conference hosted by the Graduate Business Council (GBC). Over 40 alumni spoke on 12 different industry panels including consulting, business analytics, mining, arts & media, and more.

Entrepreneurs: Born? or Created? Mercier Lecture 2018

The annual Ernest C. Mercier Lecture in Entrepreneurial Science took place on November 7 at the Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence. This year’s lecture featured Dr. Allan Carswell (Hon DSc '14), Founder and President of the Carswell Family Foundation speaking on the topic of “Entrepreneurs: Born? or Created?

Finance Alumni Share the Present Value of a Social Get Together

Schulich alumni in finance gathered at Locale Mercatto for a casual social on November 7.  This first alumni-only social hosted by the Schulich Finance Alumni Association (SFAA) was a great opportunity for those in the sector to network with fellow alumni and reconnect with long-time friends.

IMBA Alumni Reconnect with a Pour, a Pair and a Share

IMBA alumni gathered at the Bier Markt and Goose Island Brew House on November 14 for a fun social featuring a tasting and pairing menu of some craft brews. IMBAs from 1992 to 2018 enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect, reminisce and learn more about the current program from IMBA Interim Program Director, Tom Medcof (PhD '12).

Undergrad Students Shoot for the Stars at NOVA Case Competition and Conference

On November 16, BBA and iBBA students were invited to participate in the Undergraduate Business Society’s NOVA case competition and conference.  Students were treated to an inspiring keynote from alumnus Stephen Shea (MBA ’84), Managing Partner, Talent at EY.

Rob and Cheryl McEwen Recognized for Outstanding Contributution at Bryden Alumni Awards

Entrepreneurs and philanthropists, Cheryl and Rob McEwen, CM (MBA ’78, Hon LLD ’05) were presented with the Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2018 Bryden Alumni Awards on November 20. The McEwen’s have been long time supporters of the School and their latest contribution towards the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building will ensure the School continues to stay ahead of the curve in terms of world-class learning environments and eminence in research and innovation.

EMBAs Putting on the Ritz

EMBA alumni gathered at DEQ Terrace and Lounge at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on November 20.  This fun and casual social was a great opportunity for KS alumni to reconnect and network.

Dean Horváth Visits Alumni in Brazil

Dean Horváth along with professor Matthias Kipping, Richard E. Waugh Chair in Business History; Academic Director, Kellogg-Schulich EMBA Program dined with alumni in São Paulo, Brazil on November 21. That same day, Dean Horváth, alongside Professor Kipping and Dominic Barton (Hon LLD '12), Senior Partner & Global Managing Partner Emeritus, McKinsey & Company, co-hosted the Brazil-based launch of Re-Imagining Capitalism at Fundação Dom Cabral in São Paulo.

Schulich Chinese Alumni Network Celebrates the S.C.A.N. Connector

Members from the Schulich Chinese Alumni Network (S.C.A.N.) gathered to celebrate and recognize donors of the S.C.A.N Leading Change Initiative on November 30. The group collectively raised over $100,000 in support of the new Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building. The reception was held in the S.C.A.N. Connector, the hallway linking the Seymour Schulich Building to the Rob and Cheryl McEwen Graduate Study & Research Building, a symbolism of the group's connection to the Schulich Community.
S.C.A.N. is a network for all Schulich alumni and students with connections and interest in China while committed to fostering lifelong relationships to their alma mater.
