Independent Travels

by Daniel Riecker, MUDEC Student Activities Coordinator
We can hardly believe it, but we’ve already passed the halfway point of the summer session. Thanks to the beautiful weather we’ve been having lately, the castle terrace has become a favorite spot for lunch, study sessions, and lounging after class. Outdoor seating at Differdange’s cafés and restaurants is a hot commodity, and the parks and woods around the city offer cool, green escapes from the hustle and bustle. So many ways to enjoy a European summer!

When they’re not engaging with local culture, our students are seizing every opportunity they get to travel independently. Lockdowns and other pandemic measures are slowly lifting around Europe and Luxembourg’s ideal location means that many destinations are just a train ride away. Here’s what two of our summer session students have to say about their favorite experiences so far.

Aidan Drake, a rising junior studying Mathematics and Economics, especially enjoyed his weekend in Paris. “One of my favorite parts of the trip was when we rented bikes. Navigating the city that way made me feel like a local. We even biked around the Arc de Triomphe - it was a really good time and a big movie moment! We were able to go to the Catacombs as well, which is something that I had always been interested in seeing since I first learned about it.”

Many students also have personal connections to the places they visit. Tyler McMaster, a rising junior at Penn State studying International Business, spent a weekend in Belgium, where he got a personal tour thanks to a local connection. “My first weekend here at MUDEC, I was fortunate enough to travel to Brussels with my friends. During that weekend I got to visit my mom’s “sister”she was a foreign exchange student with my mom’s family when they were both in high school. It was the first time I got to meet her and her family. We have this special connection that crosses the ocean and it was really cool to meet, share stories, and spend the weekend together.”
