CSU Matters, December 2023

Dear Alumni and Friends,

2023 was a year filled with momentum and milestones for CSU. This year, we launched the "We are Cleveland State University" campaign, which has shared the stories of our students, alumni and faculty members with millions of people worldwide.

We also established the Division of Student Belonging and Success, making our students' connection to their alma mater a critical part of our mission.

And we celebrated the centennial of Fenn College. We looked back at the history of Fenn, from which CSU was founded in 1964, and welcomed Fenn alumni to campus to gather and reminisce.

In 2024, we will have even more to celebrate, including the 60th anniversary of Cleveland State University. We will reflect, honor and commemorate our six decades of education in Northeast Ohio.

"Communication is what makes us human."

Within the College of Health, faculty and students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders operate CSU's Speech and Hearing Clinic. This clinic serves clients of all ages with a wide range of disorders and also provides off-site care to organizations within the Greater Cleveland area. Thanks to the services of our clinicians, clients receive the therapy they need to understand and communicate with their friends and loved ones.

Congratulations to Fall Valedictorian Isis Duncan

Student Isis Duncan is an inspiring success story. Pursuing her education and passion for writing despite personal setbacks, she will soon to be graduating with her bachelor's in English and serving as valedictorian for the Fall Class of 2023. As Isis herself has said, "Success isn’t defined by the world but by your goals and ambitions; the milestones you place and reach are your success story."

New Opportunities for Real-World, International Experience

Starting next semester, students can take part in the Global Tech Experience program, allowing them to collaborate with other students internationally and gain experience with business partners. The program is open to all students, regardless of major, and offers tracks in digital marketing, coding for web, data analytics and coding for data.

The Value of Conversation

This season, I am spending time reading the books that fill me with hope and inspiration. Margaret Wheatley's Turning to One Another is a perfect book to include on this list. The author wrote this book based on one simple notion: "I believe we can change the world if we start talking to one another again."
