March: National Nutrition Month

Working on your personal health can really seem like a chore. Tracking calories, reading labels and planning ahead can all seem daunting if you let it. Another issue is there are so many types of diets and products out there to help you to your nutritional goals. How do you know if they are safe or credible? When there is even a question, the best thing to do is ask a registered dietitian. Why a registered dietitian? Who are they are what do they do? A registered dietitian is a professional who went through extensive research-based training to earn a degree and licensure to help you and me navigate the murky waters of nutrition. Think of them as a lighthouse in the storm, they can guide you and your family into safety.
Facebook Video about Nutritoin
“The theme for National Nutrition Month 2018 is "Go Further with Food,” says Mandy Tennyson, a registered dietitian at UAMS. “To me, this is encouraging the population to think of food as fuel, whether it's starting your day with a healthy breakfast that will help regulate blood glucose levels throughout the day, or fueling properly with food containing specific amounts of macronutrients before a workout or athletic event. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics also proposes with this theme that preparing your foods to go further by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help reduce food loss and waste.”
“Remember, all registered dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. Always check the professional's credentials and make sure you are getting your nutrition information from a reliable source.” Find the tool kit for National Nutrition month here: National Nutrition Month Celebration Kit

MyPlate, MyWins Tips: Making Family Meals

Family meals around the table provide an opportunity to spend time together.
Try these tips from www.chosemyplate.gov  to help your family enjoy mealtimes together.
  • Plan your meals
Avoid stress at mealtime by planning a weekly menu and posting it in a location for everyone to see, like a chalkboard in the kitchen.
  • Prep ahead
Have ingredients for the week ready. After you shop, cut vegetables and measure ingredients in advance for easier meals.
  • Make mealtime a priority
Make time for family meals when planning your household’s schedule each week. Try to cook, eat and clean up together!
  • Think beyond dinner
If evenings are too hectic at your house, consider other meals for
family time such as a weekend brunch or even afternoon snack time.
  • Keep meals fun and focused
Keep the family table a media- and stress-free zone. Use your valuable family time to unplug, interact and focus on each other.

Have a Great Month!
