Sauk County Youth Conservation Days
Sauk County Land Resources and Environment hosted two youth conservation days at Upham Woods with local partners including Summer Outdoor Adventure Club (SOAC), WI DNR, DATCP, USDA NRCS, International Crane Foundation, and UW-Entomology to let over 250 students from Webb Middle School and River Valley Middle School participating in a conservation service project to help develop ecological knowledge and skills needed to restore and preserve our land, water, air and wildlife. In addition to their service project, students had the opportunity to learn directly from these partners in a variety of activities including herpetology, animal signs, honeybee secrets, exploring macro-invertebrates of the Wisconsin River, nature journaling, crane conservation, archery, research in action, and fishing.
Youth as Partners in Civic Leadership (YPCL) returned to Upham Woods this fall for their annual conference. So many dedicated high school students and youth workers came together to build community and capacity. They are:
-Creating youth centers in Spooner
-Preventing gun violence in Racine
-Searching for spaces for youth art performance in Madison
-Reenvisioning recreation for Hmong youth in Milwaukee
-Curbing substance abuse through gathering spaces in Webster
-Using social media to stop domestic violence in Wisconsin Rapids, Appleton and Beloit
-Creating space for Black Youth voice in Waukesha
-Elevating Indigenous women in Green Bay and Oneida
We are inspired by this amazing work and are grateful to our colleagues at Extension who chose to host their conference here.
