Back to School Waste Reduction & Sustainability |
As you and your family get ready for the new school year, follow the three R’s – reduce, reuse, recycle –to decrease your consumption and waste production. Use the suggestions below to make back-to-school more sustainable!
|
-
Avoid overbuying by taking inventory of what supplies you already have, what can be reused, and what you need.
- Use up pens, pencils, markers, and other supplies before buying new ones.
- Repair items like backpacks, lunchboxes, clothing, and shoes when possible.
- Check out thrift stores and online reuse marketplaces before buying brand new school supplies, clothes, or shoes.
-
For college students, look for furniture, kitchen supplies, and other household items at thrift stores and online reuse marketplaces.
|
-
Give supplies you no longer need to friends and classmates or donate them. Some schools may accept gently used school supplies.
- Pack lunches in a reusable lunchbox. Pack food in reusable containers and reusable bags. Don’t forget your reusable silverware and cloth napkin!
- Bring a reusable water bottle to school instead of using single-use plastic bottles.
-
Reuse partially used notebooks. Use them for new classes or projects when possible or remove the pages and use them as loose notebook paper.
- Get creative and turn used school supplies and materials into crafts and décor.
- Donate books and textbooks or check if teachers will accept them gently used.
|
|
|
-
Recycle old paper and notebook pages. Remove notebook binds and plastic covers before recycling. Paper notebook covers can be recycled.
-
If you buy supplies online, be sure to recycle the cardboard boxes. Corrugated cardboard can be placed in single family curbside carts. Do not put corrugated cardboard in recycling carts at multifamily housing complexes. Recycle separately in corrugated cardboard containers at your complex, the Waste & Recycling Centers, or 24-Hr Drop-Off Sites.
-
Plastic mailing envelopes or padded envelopes can be recycled separately with plastic bags/film at the Eubanks Road and Walnut Grove Church Road Waste & Recycling Centers. Do NOT recycle in curbside/single-stream recycling.
- Look for items like notebooks and computer paper made of post-consumer recycled content.

A monthly review of the most common and obscure findings in recycling carts.
As part of the Recycling Stars Program, Solid Waste staff evaluate curbside recycling carts to educate residents on proper recycling. The program’s goal is to improve the overall quality and quantity of recyclables collected from households around the County. Residents that recycle properly are awarded a star sticker. Residents also receive feedback on unaccepted items found in their recycling cart via a letter or ‘Oops’ tag attached to their cart. For more information on the Recycling Stars Program, please visit our website.
Some contaminants that inspectors have found recently:
|
- 3-ring binders are not recyclable. Reuse or donate binders in good condition. Binders with metal rings in poor condition can be disposed of in the Scrap Metal containers at the Waste & Recycling Centers.
-
Floss containers are not recyclable. They are too small to be recycled and are not one of the four accepted plastic shapes (plastic bottles, tubs, jugs, and jars). Please throw them away.
- Parchment paper is not recyclable. Throw away parchment paper.
- Waste Reduction Tip: Use reusable silicone baking mats or cooking oil.
- Shoes are not recyclable, but they can be brought to Clothes & Shoes Drop-Off at Eubanks Road, Walnut Grove Church Road, and High Rock Road Waste & Recycling Centers. Shoes in good condition should be donated.
- Waste Reduction Tip: Repair shoes at home or through a local business.
-
Wax paper is not recyclable. Plain wax paper, not to be confused with parchment paper or other baking sheets not specifically labeled as “wax paper,” is compostable.
- Waste Reduction Tip: Switch to reusable containers or beeswax wrap.
