Spring 2025 Newsletter

Welcome to the Spring 2025 edition of the SoCal Heat Hub newsletter. Today we're highlighting updates related to research, community engagement, and education. We'll also share three upcoming events on the topics of climate change and extreme heat that may be of interest to those of you following the Hub.

Creating spaces for students to envision themselves as scientists. Their scientific work is not just a part of the classroom, but a valuable contribution to the scientific community.

In this guest blog post, City Heights Prep science teacher and Heat Hub partner Rachel Davey describes her experience working with the Heat Hub team to install a weather station on campus and the process of developing curricula around it. Plus, some first-hand accounts from students after attending a field trip to Scripps Pier and Birch Aquarium.

Ecohydrology Team Members Present Findings at AGU Conference

In December 2024, Laney Wicker and Xueli Yang of the SoCal Heat Hub’s Ecohydrology and Sustainable Greening team presented their research at the American Geophysical Union annual meeting in Washington D.C. SoCal Heat Hub’s 2025 Community Partner Workshop

We held our annual community partner meeting this February at WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park. It was a big success and we look forward to continuing to work together with partners at events like these (and in other capacities) in the future! Read about it on the blog.

- San Diego Science Project will be hosting an Earth Systems Design Summit for educators this June. Apply now at the SDSP website.
Monday, June 23^rd: San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative Understanding Risk & Insurance Solutions Workshop
- Our colleagues over at SDRCC are asking you to save the date for an upcoming workshop on understanding climate change risk and insurance. Follow SDRCC so you can catch all the info when it's announced.
Saturday, August 16^th: San Diego Heat and Human Health Summit (H3SD)
- Registration is now open for the third annual Heat and Human Health Summit to be held at UC San Diego on August 16th. Check out the H3SD web page for information on how to register as a guest or speaker.
