Immense Gratitude for our Corporate Work Study Partners, New & Old
For the past 20 years, we have been welcoming corporate partners to the De La Salle Community. As we embrace the new academic year every autumn, we are grateful for past and current partners’ continued passion and commitment for our program. The past two years have been particularly humbling as we continue to navigate the challenges of COVID-19. We fully recognize that our school and its unique Corporate Work Study Program would not be possible without the love and support from our corporate community.
We are so thrilled that this year, many students have been able to return to the office for the program. However, due to COVID-19, many committed partners are unable to host students in their workplaces. Therefore CWSP adapted by creating our first-ever satellite office, thanks to the generosity of Puppet and their donated space. Currently, more than 13 partners utilize this new space, providing 50 students with the opportunity to experience what the future workplace may look like.
We want to thank all renewing partners and the 17 new partners who have been flexible and show great faith in our school, students, and innovative work study program. Together, we have weathered the ups and downs in the workforce and have creatively adapted the work study program to meet many challenges.

Huge Year for DLSNC Student Acceptances to Minds Matter Portland
This year, we had a record number of ninth-grade applicants accepted into the Minds Matter Portland program. We are so proud of these nine, now sophomore, students who are participating in Minds Matter: Elane Abebe, Natnael Araya, Genesis Gomez-Mejia, Grace Hill, Maleha Hussain, Diana Ku Peraza, Monica Lopez Hernandez, Jadyn Nguyen, and Daniela Santiago-Hernandez.
Minds Matter’s mission is to “bring bright and motivated high school students from families with limited financial means together with dedicated mentors to achieve academic excellence and expand educational and life horizons.” To learn more, visit Minds Matter.
Senior Gabriela Flores has loved “learning a lot about the college experience”, particularly through her accomplishments in two pre-college courses—illustration at California College of the Arts and public speaking (online) at Brown. She cited her mentor, a public health doctor at Kaiser, for helping her soften her “independent and stubborn” mindset to see the value of reaching out for and accepting help when needed.
Senior Ahemed Bullo is grateful for the program’s strong offerings, particularly his mentor, a law student. “The tutoring is really great,” Ahemed shared. “It’s helped out a lot, especially in math. It kept me ahead of my class. The program helps us prepare for the challenges we’ll face in the future.”

DLSNC Participates in Walk for Joy Fundraiser
The Walk for Joy, an annual fundraiser involving students and staff from the five Portland metro Catholic High Schools, happened on Sunday, September 26th. The event raises both awareness and money for the Children's Cancer Association.
DLSNC students met on campus and traveled to Central Catholic High School where the group then walked towards the Springwater Corridor Trail, ultimately ending up at Sellwood Park to celebrate an outdoor Mass with all the participants. Sophomores Kynayzya Brewer and Daniela Santiago-Hernandez read the Prayers of the Faithful during the mass. Leading up to the event and afterward, DLSNC fundraised on campus for CCA with ice cream sandwich and raffle sales.

Fall Sports Recap
As we began this year in our new home, we were both excited to step into sharing the role of Co-Athletic Directors. After finishing last year with a shortened season for all sports, we were able to welcome back JV and Varsity Volleyball, as well as Women’s and Men’s Soccer with a full athletic season. The Athletic Program is a huge part of who we are as a school community.
It has been amazing to see our fans, families, and staff members come out and support our student-athletes. Being able to hear the cheers of the fans as they applaud all the hard work put in by our athletes is priceless.
As the fall season closes out, we are excited to honor our senior athletes. For Volleyball, Veronica Jones. For Women's Soccer, Katy Interian Rojas, Natalia Sanchez, Apache Roberson, Brianna Gonzalez, Emily Salinas, Reem Osman, and Kennedy Pereira. For Men’s Soccer, Ivan Caballero, MarQui Scott, Alex Rivera, Alan Salinas, Jorge Uribe, Emanuel Montoya, Josiah Liebert, and Antonio Bracamontes.

Q&A with 2021-22 Jesuit Volunteer, Alex Ontogtokh
What inspired you to make such a big move across the country to live in a JV community and take on your role at DLSNC of Academic Resource Center Assistant?
I’ve always been a person who loves exploring different regions and cultures. I grew up in the Midwest, attended college on the East Coast, so naturally, the next move was the West Coast. When I found out about Jesuit Volunteer Corps Northwest during my senior year of college, I knew that the combination of service, living in a close-knit community, and having the opportunity to be in the beautiful Pacific Northwest was more than enough to convince me to become a Jesuit Volunteer.
What excites you about working with DLSNC students?
I am excited to not only become one of the many resources that students have access to but to get to know the students in a personal way. High school can be stressful at times.
