Kingfish Shootout August 2-3 
Carrabelle's 11th Annual Kingfish Shootout will take place on Saturday and Sunday August 2-3. The event is hosted at the C-Quarters marina as a benefit to the Leukemia Research Foundation. Click here for Tournament details.
Ice Festival in August
Honors Dr. John Gorrie, Father of Modern Refrigeration
Apalachicola will honor Dr. Gorrie next month as part of the upcoming Water Street Festival of Ice. On Friday August 15 noted author and ice expert Ellie Morris will present a talk about the impact the introduction of ice on early North Florida development. Morris’ ice presentation will be the first in the City’s 2014-2015 Visit Florida funded lecture series. The next day, Saturday, August 16, the town will host a re-inactment of the first delivery of ice to Apalachicola and celebrate Dr. John Gorrie's induction into the Florida Hall of Inventors with a proclamation from Apalachicola Mayor Van Johnson and ceremonial champagne toast. Ice carving, snow cones and music will follow at the the John Gorrie Museum located at 46 6th Street. Later in the month, Aug. 30, the cool continues with a cool jazz concert on the docks. Raney Days Book Signing

August 2 at Raney Museum
There will be a book signing for Raney Days, the new book by Sara McFerrin portraying the David Raney family,  on August 2 from 3-6 at the Raney House Museum in Apalachicola. The Apalachicola Area Historical Society will also feature an ice cream social as part of the Water Street Festival of Ice during the event. Click here for details.

Paddling Trip Aug. 23

Join the Apalachicola Riverkeepers on their monthly paddling trip on August 23 in and around the Apalachicola River and Bay. The trips, which are hosted each fourth Saturday, are free to members and $30 for non members.  Click to learn more.
Forgotten Coast Paddle Club Hosts monthly paddle event 
Can't get enough paddle love? Join the Forgotten Coast Paddle Club for their monthly paddle event in August. The club, which recently hosted an attempt to break the world's biggest kayak gathering are already planning next year's attempt. Contact the Paddle Club for the schedule.

River Blueway
The Apalachicola River and associated tributaries has long been a favorite destination for paddling enthusiasts. Kayaks and canoes are ideal ways to experience the river and the area’s natural habitat, and many of the best places are accessible only by paddling. 
The State's Greenways and Trails Division has created a series of Blueway maps which feature access points, campsites, points of interest, and amenities. Cape St. George Lighthouse Features Full Moon Climb
Watch the sun set and full moon rise from the top of the Cape St. George Lighthouse on Sunday, August 10 from 8-9:30pm. Tickets are $15.00 per person, or $10.00 for St. George Lighthouse Association members, and include light hors d'oeuvres and a sparkling cider toast to the Full Moon.  After sunset, additional climbers are welcome at the top for a view of the Full Moon, as time and space permit. Reservations are recommended. Click here for more information. 
SGI Sizzler August 9
The Tate's Hell Track Club will host the 17th annual St. George Island Sizzler 5K Race & One Mile Fun Run – on Saturday, August 9, 2014. The event is a benefit for the Franklin County Humane Society. On-site registration & packet pickup begins at 3:00pm at St. George Lighthouse Park. The One Mile Fun Run begins at 5:30pm and the 5K Race begins at 6:00pm. 3 Day Rock By The Sea Charity Concert  Sept. 25-27
St. George Island and surrounding communities will host the annual Rock by the Sea, Charity Concert and Golf event Sept. 25-27. The event, hosted annually at Harry A's on St. George Island and at the St. James Bay Golf Resort, is dedicated to raising money to assist deserving charities who provide direct services to those in need. Rock By The Sea 2014 will feature a golf tournament, 5k run and three nights of music at Harry A's in St. George Island.  Artists include renowned Nashville singer and songwriter Chuck Cannon, as well as MELODIME, Radio Birds, Tim Brantley, Steve Everett, The Roosevelts, Brian Collins Band, and W2. Weekend Passes for Rock By The Tee MUSIC are $45 per person and allow admission to all public performances at Harry A's.

Estuaries Day Sept. 26
The Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) celebrates the annual National Estuaries Day at its Research and Visitor Center in Eastpoint on September 26. The festivities will run from 1:30-6 p.m. and will feature family-friendly activities and exhibits.  The Visitor Center is located near the St. George Island Bridge at 108 Island Drive, Eastpoint.
Feeling like doing more for the environment? Join your neighbors Sept. 20 for Franklin County's annual Coastal Cleanup. There are cleanup locations throughout the county.
