Did You Know?

All members of the PNCA alumni family (that's you, friend!) enjoy some exciting benefits. These are just a few of the ways we have to show how much we appreciate you! Take a gander and make 2017 your year to take advantage of all the connections and opportunities your alumni membership opens up for you.

* Benefits marked with an astericks are available to degree-receiving PNCA graduates. All other benefits are available to all PNCA alumni. We define an alumna or alumnus as anyone who completed one or more semesters at PNCA or the Museum Art School.
** SALT is available to all PNCA alumni who graduated in 2012 or later.
New Alumni Council
Over the past seven months, staff in the Alumni Office have been meeting with a small group of invested alumni to strategize and begin building a dynamic alumni program at PNCA. We're excited to announce that we're ready to launch the PNCA Alumni Council, a self-sustaining alumni organization that fosters strong connections between alumni and the College, develops programming that meets alumni interests and needs, creates meaningful opportunities for alumni to volunteer and be involved, and celebrates alumni accomplishments.

Linda Hutchins '88,
our new alumni representative on the PNCA Board of Governors has enthusiastically agreed to chair the new Alumni Council. Now, we are looking for 8-15 PNCA alumni representatives to serve renewable one and two-year terms with Linda. In addition to a few identified positions such as young alumni representatives and graduate program representatives, we hope to recruit alumni representatives from a wide range of class years and programs and include practicing artists, business owners, designers, educators, and people who are thriving in unexpected fields.
The Council will meet five times per year.

Are you or someone you know interested in building the PNCA alumni community and strengthening alumni engagement and involvement with the College?

If you're interested in rolling up your sleeves and taking a leadership role or if you know of someone who'd be perfect for the job, please fill out this survey.
This would not be possible without the help of our Alumni Launch Committee: Eric Balderas '99, Damon Eckoff '06, Tamara English '04, Stephen Leflar '72, Molly Mendoza '14, Brad Rogers '86, John Summerson '15, Leslie Vigeant MFA '11, and Julia Wayne '88.

Bravo!
Caitlin Rose Sweet MFA '14 is making a big splash right now with feminist, queer, body positive conceptual crafts. Her "pussypipes" just went viral on BuzzFeed and other online sites. Check out Caitlin's website, Etsy shop, and recent profiles in Paper magazine and TimeOut New York for more.

Alumnus Byron Courts recently retired from Melvin Mark after 40 years of dedicated service as Director of Engineering Services. While at Melvin Mark, Byron supervised engineering operations at dozens of buildings and coordinated sustainable practices and certifications for Melvin Mark properties including LEED programs, Green Globe certifications, and Energy Star. Byron worked with owners, architects and engineers to complete one of the first pilot projects for LEED in the Northwest. Congratulations on your retirement, Byron!

This month marks another kind of retirement: Worksound International moved out of its home on SE Alder. For years, Prof. Modou Dieng and collaborators have presented exhibitions and programs enabling diverse international practices. The story's not over, so stay tuned for the next incarnation of W.I.

PICA is hosting series of workshops for artists called "First 100 Days" on organizing, safety, and protest to encourage resistance to the Trump administration. PNCA connected artists include Demian DinéYazhi' '13 and Takahiro Yamamoto MFA '13. On January 28, 2017, First 100 Days will follow up with a day-long event at PNCA focused on building longer term resistance strategies within the arts community. More information here.

Edd Key MFA '14 invoked the spirit of kitsch with a recent public art sculpture produced for Seattle's Fall 2016 Seattle Center Sculpture Walk. In Platanos x acerifabulous, Edd adorned two red oak trees in London Plane "outfits" that wrap the tree trunks and have giant bananas suspended from their branches. All of the artists participated in the Seattle's Office of Arts & Culture’s Public Art Boot Camp.

Harry Schneider MFA '16 is commuting rather frequently between Portland and San Francisco, where he's working in Paul Mullowney's print studio. You can follow Harry and all his print adventures via Instagram at @mightyfineprint.

Sally Hopkins '74 is working towards her Master Stenciling Certification (having already passed the Master Stenciling in Architecture and Wood) from the International Decorative Arts League. Sally received her Certified Stenciling Certification in 2010.

When Christine Babic '11 was two years old, the Exxon Valdez struck a reef in the waters just beyond her fishing village and spilled so much crude oil that you can still find it today in some places if you just dig up the top layer of earth. 28 years later, issues around the environment and native culture continue to inspire her work. Her first solo show in Seattle opened December 1 at the Center for Contemporary Art in Pioneer Square.

Samson Stilwell and Ben Glas '17 have an exciting new sonic adventure called Soundspace. It's a radio installation show, broadcasted on Freeform Portland 90.3, with a physical listening situation at Beacon Sound at the same time, every other Sunday, 12-2pm.

Gary Wiseman '14 will be doing a six-month residency in New Zealand beginning in December.

Tessa Heck MFA '16 just received her first grant through Working Artist. Congrats!

Eileen Isagon Skyers MA '14 recently co-curated the second exhibition for DiMoDA, a Virtual Reality exhibition platform that exists as a fully immersive Virtual Reality application, and downloadable standalone for Mac/PC. The project was introduced at TRANSFER in New York and Import Projects in Berlin, where viewers were welcome to don Oculus Rift headsets that allowed them to enter the museum lobby. Fellow PNCA alum Brenna Murphy '09 is featured in the exhibition. DiMoDA 2.0: Morphé Presence was at Superchief Gallery in Brooklyn, NY and will travel VIA Pittsburgh (PA), Aurora Festival, Dallas (TX) and Satellite Fair, Miami Beach (FL). It will be a featured exhibition at the RISD museum in Rhode Island starting in mid December.

In our last newsletter, we pointed you towards an exhibition by Bukola Koiki MFA '15, Angelica Millán MFA '17, Prof. Victor Maldonado, and Prof. Modou Dieng. The exhibition received all kinds of nice press including mentions in Oregon ArtsWatch, the Oregonian, Willamette Week, and others. Read on!

Alumna Hazel Miller '16 was featured on Saatchi's One to Watch blog which recognizes emerging artists from around the world who are already garnering attention for their work. Hazel's paintings offer a new perspective on traditional art historical practices, fueled by her interest in the way imagery has shaped her viewpoint as a woman.

Fritz Liedtke '02 shot both video and stills for the Measure 97 campaign here in Oregon. And the fun part, according to Fritz? "It was all in Spanish, allowing me to put my second language to work as I directed on set, and as I photographed in Latino businesses around town." Also of note: Image Journal published a feature on Fritz and his fine art work a few years back. The cover image was taken from a large series he created on adolescence, called Welcome to Wonderland, which you can see on his fine art site

(Be sure also to catch new shows by Louis Bunce and Eric Stotik '85 at Russo Lee Gallery at the same time.)

PNCA Professor Victor Maldonado and his ongoing MadMex project was featured in the most recent issue of 1859 Magazine. “It’s the double identity of being insiders and outsiders, knowing the script but not all the rules in the ring,” he said, referring to his Mexican birth, immigration and ultimately, American citizenship. You can read the whole article here.

Takahiro Yamamoto MFA '13 and the dance collective Physical Education are artsts-in-residence at PNCA this year. One of their performance workshops at PNCA was featured on OPB's State of Wonder. Thank you April Baer!
