MARDIE GRAS BARKUS PARADE
The 8th annual Mardie Gras Barkus Parade drew the largest crowd in it's history.  There were more people in the parade and watching the parade than ever before.  There were marching bands, floats, golf carts and walkers, all decked out in Mardi Gras finery.  The dogs were decorated head to tail and everyone enjoyed the spectacle.
In addition to the parade, there was live music in the park as well as 22 art vendors, 8 food vendors and of course the Humane Society which enjoyed 5 pup adoptions and 1 kitty adoption.  It was a spectacular day.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers for all of their hard work.  It takes months and months of hard work by a lot of pet loving, generous people to pull this event together.  They do this out of the goodness of their hearts knowing that what they do will have a positive impact on the lives of the homeless pets in our area.
Thank you Krewe, thank you volunteers and thank everyone who participated in this event.  We look forward to next year and continued fun and success!
POLLY
We are looking for the right home for Polly.  She is part Doberman part Lab and very sweet but "shows" terribly at the shelter.  She barks when someone she doesn't know approaches her which of course puts potential adopters off.  She isn't aggressive but she does fear things and people she's not familiar with.
Our volunteers have been working with her for months and she has made great progress.  She will now walk on a leash, knows basic commands and has gained trust and confidence but may never be a dog who is comfortable with new situations.
What kind of home does she need?  She needs a home without a lot of different people in and out all the time.  She needs a fenced in back yard that she can become familiar with and is comfortable in.  Another dog would be great as she is never happier than while playinig and she should be gradually introduced to new surroundings.
Polly is a loving dog and she needs a loving adopter.  She needs someone who will be patient with her and who understands her needs.  If you think she is the right dog for you please contact us at 850-670-8417 and please "share" this newsletter in hopes we find her a home.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Charlie was this years King at the 2018 Mardi Gras Pet Parade hosted by the Mystic Krewe of Salty Barkers.  He was selected to be king due to his majestic ball handling abilities (see pic above) as well as his crown wearing swagger (pic above).  He carried out his duties with great style and panache and reigned over his domain atop a Carolina Skiff during the parade.
Charlie showed great kindness to all subjects who approached.  The young, the old, the two and four legged alike.  He was a king who reigned supreme and made Franklin County Humane Society proud!  Charlie was not adopted.
We brought Charlie back to the shelter after the parade, tucked him in for the night and our efforts to find an adopter for the king began afresh the next day .  When and by whom would Charlie be adopted?
Ten days passed with only two inquiries about Charlie.  How could that be?  We knew he had made a great impression and we felt sure his adopter was out there somewhere.  Finally on the 10th day the call we had been waiting for.  A young woman who had met and spent time with Charlie at the parade wanted to come and see him again.  She said she had felt a connection and after losing her beloved 16 yr old dog recently wanted to see Charlie again.
She came to the shelter and spent time with 3 dogs but it was clear from the start that Charlie had won her heart. No surprise. After all, he is the King of Hearts.  Below is a picture of the King after his adoption was complete and he was about to go home.  Long live the KING!
HAPPY ST PATRICKS DAY!
