Fort Lewis College has partnered with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus to launch a new nursing program housed at FLC, prioritizing a curriculum based on cultural competency, community service, and educational excellence.

Five FLC students are conducting research on the effects of Vitamin D on “long-haul” COVID-19 symptoms. Working with Shere Byrd, professor of Biology, students are learning skills that are critical to scientific research during the month-long study.

The founding of the CU Nursing Fort Lewis College Collaborative comes at a critical time, with a nursing shortage in the Southwest and Indigenous healthcare providers underrepresented throughout the country.
The Mellon Foundation has awarded Fort Lewis College with a $1.5 million grant for the revitalization of Native languages. The funds will go toward constructing the All Our Nations Language Revitalization Hub, housed in the Native American & Indigenous Studies Department.
Fabian Martinez (History, '18) was honored with third place for Best Feature Story in the 2021 National Native Media Awards from the Native American Journalist Association for his article detailing the history and repair of the La Boca bridge. Martinez researched the history of the steel railroad bridge in The Southern Ute Drum’s archive and talked with elders who lived during that era.
This year’s Hawk Tank will again feature students from Fort Lewis College, San Juan College, and local area high schools. The competition allows young entrepreneurs from the Four Corners region to work with professionals in their industry, develop lasting connections, and learn how to market their novel ideas.
Ph.D. graduates from the University of Colorado Boulder are migrating southwest to teach undergraduate students at Fort Lewis College. FLC students considering graduate school are already benefiting from this unique partnership, with the CU Boulder Ph.D. graduates stepping in as mentors as well as educators.
Lee Bitsóí, associate vice president for Diversity Affairs, leaves behind a legacy of integrity at Fort Lewis College when he starts a new position at Brandeis University next month. Among his many achievements was helping campus navigate the harrowing history of the Fort Lewis boarding school.

That's hawksome

The Smithsonian American Art Museum has announced that artist Ursala Hudson (Art, '14) will be featured in the craft invitational at its Renwick Gallery in 2023. Hudson (Tlingit) and her sister Kahlil were selected as an artist duo for their work in the Chilkat and Ravenstail weaving styles, expressing the honors and burdens that Native artists balance as they carry forward their cultural traditions.
