Breaking news from Florida! Preliminary numbers from Florida's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) show that 2023 will be a record-breaking year for loggerhead and green turtle nests! As of July 31st, both species have surpassed their annual nest count record in Florida – and the nesting season isn’t over yet! The preliminary statewide totals as of July 31st are as follows:
  • 127,808 loggerhead nests (previous record 122,707 in 2016)
  • 56,151 green turtle nests (previous record 53,102 in 2017)
  • 1,725 leatherback nests
  • 11 Kemp’s ridleys nests
The leatherback nesting season has concluded for this year, and loggerhead nesting activity slows down in August. Green turtles should still be nesting in large numbers during August and to some extent in September. We look forward to seeing what the final nest counts will be!
Meanwhile in the Caribbean, we surpassed 1,000 leatherback nests on Soropta Beach, Panama, only the second time we have ever registered that number since STC started monitoring there. Leatherback season wrapped up in Tortuguero with 111 nests in 29 km of total beach. Green turtle nesting season in Tortuguero is off to a great start, as our Research Assistants have worked 138 individual turtles and counted 6,100 nests. Day Time Nest Dig This Thursday 8/17
STC has a limited number of spaces for the public to join us on an outdoor daytime nest dig educational program TOMORROW! This is an opportunity to see how sea turtle scientists study the hatching success of loggerhead sea turtle nests in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge. Following the nest excavation, there may be an opportunity to observe a live hatchling be released into the ocean, but this cannot be guaranteed.  For more information and to reserve your spot, click here!
Job Announcement: Sea Turtle Lighting Specialist
STC is hiring a Lighting Project Specialist to work on our Sea Turtle Lighting Project! This person will work as part of our lighting team implementing sea turtle lighting retrofits, dune plantings, assisting with educational workshops, and other outreach initiatives to help further reduce lighting impacts to nesting turtles. The Lighting Project is funded through multiple grants that all aim to mitigate the impacts of artificial light and increase sea turtle survivorship by reducing hatchling disorientation.
