Educator of the Year Nominations Due 10/30

Time is running out to nominate an educator who embraces collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking in their speech and debate classrooms for the State Educator of the Year awards. Recipients will become finalists for the 2018 National Educator of the Year award!

The NSDA's Biggest Names

Did you know Sonia Sotomayor was a member? What about Stephen Colbert? We recently launched a new page at www.speechanddebate.org/alumni featuring notable speech and debate alumni. We've included some big names, but we'd love your help filling in our list! If you know a coach or a former student who should be featured, please email us

Discounted Liability Insurance

We are excited to partner with the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) to offer liability insurance at a reduced rate. This coverage is available for coaches and teachers to purchase at a low cost of $14. Working with our partners at Dissinger Reed, the NFHS and the NSDA offer coverage for the following types of incidents:
• Sexual abuse and molestation
• Participant legal liability
• Crisis response
• Various accidental medical
• Personal and advertising injury
• Damage to premises rented to you
• Premises medical payments
Purchase of the insurance can be bundled with NSDA membership dues. Even if you’ve already joined or renewed, you should see this option when adding individual coach memberships. From the coach roster of your Account page, anyone without NFHS insurance will see a “Buy” link in the NFHS column over to the right.

More than 475 Big Questions tournament slots have already been claimed for this year! We are excited to give more than $500,000 to schools who hold debates on the topic, Resolved: Humans are fundamentally different from other animals.
You can sign up in three simple steps!
1. Apply to host your event, even if the details are tentative. It can be held at a weekend tournament, an after-school tournament, or even in your classroom! All you need is at least 15 students to debate three rounds.
2. Hold your event. You'll earn $500 for the first 15 students, and $25 for each additional competitor. Earn $100 bonuses by adding Big Questions to your regular season tournament and having three or more schools participate.
