| Spotlight: Residential Life & Housing Services
| |
Residential Life and Housing Services (ResLife) is responsible for the overall administration and operation of NYU’s residence halls, home to approximately 11,500 undergraduate and graduate students during the academic year and summer session. Our office works in coordination with many departments and student groups to provide and maintain comfortable, safe and secure living environments for eligible NYU students.
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers:
Question. If I completed my on campus housing application, when will I receive my assignment for the new academic year?
Answer. Housing assignments for Fall 2024 will be distributed on a rolling basis from mid-July to mid-August.
Question. What are the chances I will have a roommate?
Answer. More than 97% of our bedrooms are shared, and more than 99% of our bedrooms are in shared apartments. Fewer than 3% of our bedrooms are private, and most of those are assigned to students with medical needs that are approved by the NYU Moses Center for Student Accessibility.
Question. Am I guaranteed to be placed with my preferred roommate in my preferred residence hall?
Answer. We make every effort to accommodate as many housing application assignment preferences as possible, including mutually verified roommate requests, but our ability to grant assignment preferences is strictly based on space availability. Based on many years of experience, we find that NYU students bloom wherever they are planted!
Question. If I applied to the Residential College at the Paulson Center, what are the chances I will be assigned there?
Answer. Nearly 1600 students applied for 400 available spaces, so there is about a 25% chance that we will be able to accommodate that request.
Question. When will I receive information about Fall Check In?
Answer. Details will be included in your Fall 2024 housing assignments updates beginning in mid-July, but most information is available on our website.

Conversation StartersAs key partners in your student's success, having intentional conversations helps to ground your student as they begin their transition to college. Here are some topics and prompting questions to discuss in the coming weeks:
Establish clear, and mutually agreed upon, expectations for communicating- When you are at school, how do you want to stay in touch?
- How often would you like me to call/text/email?
Discuss strategies for managing finances - How will you cover personal expenses and track your spending (e.g., part-time employment, establishing spending limits)?
Prepare your student to engage with different people- How will you manage meeting, working with, or living with people you do not agree with or get along with?
- When meeting new people, what topics may feel uncomfortable at first?
Discuss personal well-being and how to care for others
What are some healthy habits you plan to keep up or start once classes begin- How will you care for a friend or peer that may need help
- Who will you reach out to when you need help and support?
