Steenberg Vineyards Harvest 2016

Our 2016 harvest began on the 8th of January, the very same day as last year, following the trend of an early start to the season. With the Cape Town heat wave, we have kept a close eye on the sugar level of the grapes as these can rise rapidly. Luckily our cooler climate has kept the harsh affects of the heat at bay.

The first grapes to arrive was our Chardonnay from Robertson which makes up our 1682 Chardonnay MCC. On the 18th of January, we began hand-harvesting our own Sauvignon Blanc destined for our Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc. To date, we have received over 300 tonnes of grapes. Cape Wine Auction - The Steenberg Lot

Established in 2014, the Cape Wine Auction Trust was created to raise money for education in the South African winelands. It is well established that the most effective method for uplifting underprivileged communities is education.

At Steenberg, we have donated a Steenberg Lot which will be auctioned off to the highest bidder with all proceeds going towards education in our wine valley. In addition to our charitable donation, Chef Garth Almazan will also be catering for the Friday night event and General Manager, John Loubser, will be our Auction Ambassador.

Update on Sustainable Seafood at Bistro 1682

The Sustainable Seafood Initiative is very close to our hearts at Steenberg. We only serve SASSI green-listed seafood and our suppliers need to hold sustainability certifications. Chef Kerry Kilpin works closely with her local producers.

With the recent gale-force South Easter hitting the Cape, the trawlers who catch Angelfish and hake have not been able to go out to sea as often. This has resulted in more stock of Yellowtail which is caught using linefishing methods. Chef Kerry Kilpin has created beautiful dishes of Asian Yellowtail Tartare and Herb-crusted Yellowtail with chickpea, olive ragout, coriander yoghurt and curry oil.
