Long-Awaited New Beginnings
With a simple good morning fist pump and warm smile, the 2021-2022 school year started. The blessing of welcoming back our students to in-person instruction coupled with opening the doors to our long-awaited new campus has simply been euphoric. It’s a true miracle, 20 years in the making!
With boundless hope, continued belief and a strong will to persevere, DLSNC has endured two decades. I am beyond grateful to the entire Knight Nation community who, without doubt, believed in the possibility of our beautiful school—creating a full-circle opportunity where worthy, talented students from North Portland would not only receive a rigorous, faith-based Lasallian education, but also experience a career-inspiring work program. Wow—how fortunate have we all been in witnessing this true blessing!
The new construction portion of our campus is close to being completed, so within the coming weeks, the expectation is for continued celebrations. My simple ask is that you keep the DLSNC faculty, staff, and especially our students in your thoughts and prayers so that the successful start of this school year continues throughout this incredible inaugural year at our new address. Here's to the next 20 years of ongoing Lasallian education and service @ 4300 NE Killingsworth Street!

DLSNC Alums Come Full Circle to Work for Their Alma Mater
At the school year kick-off staff retreat in August, there was the traditional introduction of new staff members, however, President Oscar Leong took especial pleasure in introducing four alumnae who have joined the DLSNC staff over the past year: Olivia Carter-Howard ‘16, CWSP Corporate Partner Relations Coordinator; Stephanie Quintero Rojas ‘16, Front Desk Reception; Gabriella Quinto-Alfaro ‘16, Business Office Assistant; and Amanda Rodela Weingarten ‘05, College Counselor.
Stephanie, who started in her vital role at DLSNC on a part-time basis in August of 2020, graduated from PSU in June 2021 and now is here full-time. Gabby, who has done coursework at both PCC and PSU, started in September 2020 and loves being part of the Knight Nation professional team. A graduate of Jackson State in Mississippi, Olivia joined us in July of this year. Finally, Amanda, who is a graduate of Dominican University of California and went on to earn her MA in counseling from Manhattan College in NY, took over from the legendary Barbara Ward at the beginning of September.
In his introduction of Olivia, Stephanie, Gabby, and Amanda, President Leong expressed the hope that they will be just the first of many alums who seek to pursue careers at their alma mater, enriching the Knight Nation community through their unique, insider perspectives.

Welcome to Our Three New Faculty
Three new faculty members have joined Knight Nation this fall. We welcome Matt Hilgaertner (Geometry and Pre-Calculus), Matt Owen (Business Education), and Anne Warrington (Freshman and AP English).
Originally from Southern California, Matt H. started his teaching career as a Peace Corps volunteer in St. Vincent, West Indies. He holds a BA from Whitworth College, WA, and M. Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, NJ and has taught math in various local Christian middle and high schools.
Holding a BA from Westminster College, MO and a MA from Thunderbird School of Global Management, AZ, Matt O. has worked in every facet of business operations for large corporations as well as small businesses. Originally from AR, Matt O. plays competitive tennis, but his true passion is fly fishing the rivers and lakes of Oregon.
A Minnesota native, Anne spent her undergrad years at the College of St. Benedict, MN and has a MA from St. Mary’s University, MN. Anne has taught English and writing workshops to middle and high school students in MN and, most recently, Rainier, OR. She and her husband have three children, and in her spare time, she loves to read, run, and bake.

A New Partnership with U of P
Nursing students at the University of Portland take a Community Health class during their junior year. This course requires that each student spends the fall volunteering within a community around Portland. For the first time, two nursing students are fulfilling their volunteering requirements at DLSNC and will be on campus every Thursday during the fall semester.
The students will be presenting in various classrooms on topics such as the Covid-19 vaccine, mental health awareness, and health careers. In addition, they will be working on health and safety plans for the new campus. Distinctive in their U of P purple scrubs, they are easy to spot around campus!

First Impressions in the Cully Neighborhood
To launch the school year, Mr. Chance's three health classes cleaned up the streets near and around the new DLSNC campus in hopes of making a small impact on our environmental health. We started close to our school and cleaned up garbage outside on Killingsworth, Emerson, and 42nd. We also cleaned garbage on both sides of the street by Fernhill Park on 42nd. In total, we picked up 10 bags of garbage during those three classes. The students also earned credit towards their yearly community service hours requirement. The experience was topped off by an anonymous donation made in gratitude for the students’ hard work.
