Ed Martin

Message from the Associate Vice-President and Director of Extension

Well, it finally happened, that time of year when the parking garages are filled, the lines at the Student Union are long, and trying to cross the street on campus rivals any crosswalk in New York City… the students have returned.

It actually has been great to see everyone walking around campus again. Last week there were students with parents with maps, trying to locate buildings and classrooms before school began. This week, students walk around trying to remember where they were last week. I have always enjoyed this time of year on campus. It sort of reminds me of when I was a freshman at Michigan State University just a few short years ago. – at least in dog years.

On behalf of UArizona Cooperative Extension, Welcome back, students – Bear Down!

Tamara Floyd with Ed Martin, state Director of Extension

Heart of Extension Awards

Eight Extension teammates from across the state earned Heart of Extension Awards in 2023. Each received a plaque August 4 at the Annual Conference in Tucson. In the coming weeks, TEN will feature the presentation speeches from the conference. Congratulations, Tamara Floyd!

Tamara Floyd,
Community Outreach Professional, Maricopa County

Tamara embodies the heart, soul, and spirit of the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension. As a Community Outreach Professional Tamara reflects enthusiasm for her work, creativity in family engagement, and superior performance in attracting and retaining community partners. She seeks creative ways to partner with SNAP-Ed, EFNEP, 4-H and other programs in the Maricopa County Extension office.

Tamara’s work is embedded in the multicultural community of south Phoenix at the University of Arizona – Roosevelt Early Childhood Family Resource Center. Tamara takes her role seriously as a liaison and cultural guide to the African-American and Black families who reside in the area.

Tamara is a sought-after community partner with many agencies recognizing the benefits of collaborating with the Family Resource Center due to her outgoing demeanor, conscientious work ethic, and can-do attitude. In July 2021, she led a Community Health and Care Fair which brought together 20 community partners and more than 50 volunteers to offer mammograms, EKGs, preventive health tests, oral health and sensory screenings and other activities to more than 300 people. One partner said "lives were saved here today."

Making Professional Websites with Quarto & RStudio

Professional websites are a useful way to connect and share your work with others. While there are a lot of tools available to create websites, we will show you how to create yours with Quarto. Quarto is a free scientific and technical publishing system for creating documents, presentations, and websites. This platform evolved from R Markdown (though don’t worry if you haven’t heard of either Quarto or R Markdown).

In this workshop, we’ll include the basics of Quarto, and use it to create and customize a website. You will leave this workshop with a published website. This can be used as a personal website, research projects or other endeavors.

Make sure to have all the pre-requisites on the workshop page ready by the workshop! Click here to register.
