Interfaith Social Justice Journey: Equal Justice Initiative
Sunday, January 22, 2023, 6:30 am-7:30 pm, Montgomery, Alabama
The Office of Spiritual and Religious Life and the Inter-Religious Council invite you to join an Interfaith Social Justice Journey to Montgomery, Alabama. We will be visiting the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. This daylong trip will focus on the legacy of slavery, mass incarceration, and racially-motivated crimes. Learn more about EJI at https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/.
There will be a pre-departure breakfast session on campus before we depart and opportunities for reflection throughout the trip. Tonight: Emory Bodhi Day Celebration
Thursday, December 8, 5:30-7:00 p.m., Cannon Chapel Sanctuary
Bodhi Day is celebrated in the Mahayana Tradition of Buddhism to commemorate the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Gautama Buddha. Emory Buddhist community and spiritual friends from Atlanta will gather to celebrate this occasion with spiritual reflection, contemplation and gratitude. Vegetarian dinner will follow the spiritual practice. RSVP here.

Shabutsu Buddhist Art Workshop Recap
On Friday, December 2, Dr. Cheryl Crowley and Venerable Priya Sraman facilitated a Shabutsu Buddhist Art Workshop in the Carlos Museum. It was a wonderful time of mindfulness, creativity, and relaxation. Students from Emory Buddhist Club and the larger Emory community enjoyed learning about Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and Buddhist while engaging in mindfully copying Buddhist images.
Shabutsu is a practice in the Japanese Buddhist tradition that involves copying Buddhist images and texts. It is a chance to slow down, mindfully tracing the beauty of the lines and colors without any pressure to be “perfect.” It allows one to rest and to cultivate focused attention.

Pre-Chanukah Celebration Recap
On Tuesday December 6, Emory OSRL partnered with the Bayit, Chabad, Hillel, and Meor to hold a Pre-Chanukah Celebration at Kaldi's at the Emory Student Center. Guests enjoyed latkes, donuts, and hot beverages. Emory's Jewish chaplain, Rabbi Jordan Braunig, shared encouragement to take the light of this gathering and share the joy of the Jewish community during the Chanukah holiday.
Thank you to our partners for their support with this event and to Kaldi's for the space. We hope all who attended enjoyed the time to be together at the end of the semester. Chanukah begins 12/18.

Emory Interfaith Center Artwork Engagement Sessions
This week, OSRL held engagement sessions for students and faculty and staff with Dashboard, a nonprofit arts organization, to gather concepts for artwork in the new Interfaith Center. Through a series of creative thinking processes, Emory community members shared their hopes for how the center will look and feel. Dashboard uses artwork and imagination to transform public spaces.

The University Catholic Center will be open during our normal business hours for you during finals week to provide you with a place to comfortably study. MLK Sunday in Beloved Community Worship

Join Beloved Community for worship and lunch on MLK Sunday. Rev. Tolton Ramal Pace 00C 02PH will be preaching. Rev. Pace serves as the manager of strategic partnerships and grant programs for the Home Depot Foundation. He also serves on the clergy team at Impact United Methodist Church. Rev. Pace is an engaged Emory alumnus, previously serving as co-president of Caucus of Emory Black Alumni (CEBA).
Emory Beloved Community is a weekly ecumenical Protestant worship service planned for the campus community that gathers Sundays at 11:00 a.m. during the academic year. All are welcome.

TIJS Affiliated Faculty Member Jonathan Crane to Present Public Zoom lecture - "Dying to Die: Jewish Approaches to Final Interventions"
Sunday, December 11, 7:30-9:00 p.m. Zoom Webinar
Sponsored by the Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies, this program will explore how many people feel compelled to intervene in someone’s dying, to forestall it, ameliorate its intensity, or perhaps hasten it. Such impulses are not new, of course. Religious traditions have long wrestled with the practical and ethical implications of such interventions.
Explore this complicated subject as Dr. Crane surveys a variety of Jewish perspectives on many of these matters. Register here.

Interfaith America with Eboo Patel: How can religious pluralism defeat the forces of polarization?
This week on “Interfaith America with Eboo Patel,” Eboo is joined by Robert P. Jones, founder and president of the research firm Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), to discuss the resurgence of white Christian nationalism.
Jones notes that white evangelicals now comprise 14.5% of the U.S. population, down from 25% two decades ago, and reflects on what this demographic shift means for American politics and culture.
Jones is the author of “White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity,” which won a 2021 American Book Award. He is also the author of “The End of White Christian America,” which won the 2019 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Jones writes regularly on politics, culture, and religion for The Atlantic, NBC Think, and other outlets. He is frequently featured in major national media such as CNN, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others.

Grants Available to Emory Projects Supporting Black Communities and Women and Girls
The Black Emory and Women of Emory Impact Circles invite Emory staff and faculty to submit funding proposals now for Emory projects and programs that advance the causes of their respective communities of interest on campus, in Atlanta, and beyond.
