As part of ATMIA’s Global Governmental Relations Committee (GRC) mission, regulatory trends and legislation which are likely to affect our industry are analyzed across different regions and markets.
The list of international issues on our radar is extensive. A few examples of the work the GRC is engaged in include:
  • On-going pro-cash advocacy on behalf of the ATM Cash Council and the recent launch of the Cash Repository in order to counterbalance the anti-cash bias in the media resulting from the card associations’ “war against cash”
  • On-going efforts to end Operation Choke Point in the USA through work done with Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer
  • Building an industry-wide roadmaps for the 2020 migration to Windows 10 and the 2023 migration from WinCE as well as exploring roadmaps for alternative operating systems for ATMs such as Android and Linux
  • Ongoing planning for the 50th ATM anniversary in 2017
  • Recently released new security best practices for preventing ATM skimming, an updated physical ATM security best practice to cover today's kind of attacks and security alerts on the recent "cash out" ATM frauds
  • Monitoring of international trends in payments regulations through our Global GRC, recently renamed the World Payments Council
  • Expressing our concerns over MasterCard's acquisition of Vocalink which may limit competition
  • The development of a committee to look into the need to expand on-us digital wallet transactions at ATMs to off-us transactions as well

Whew! ATMIA Europe has been busy ... super busy working to protect the future of the ATM industry in Europe.
Some of the recent initiatives we are working on include:
  • Kicking off a Single Market Project that ATMIA can take to the European Commission to remove the barriers to the creation of a single market,
  • Working to prevent the erosion of competition in the payments infrastructure,
  • Hosting a Government Relations webinar in September, and
  • Continuing to work to educate lawmakers about the importance of cash and consumer payment choice.

As part of its mission to serve as a voice for the ATM industry, ATMIA USA is actively engaged with a variety of industry and government bodies and is actively involved in numerous important industry issues and initiatives.
As the ATM becomes an increasingly more important part of the banking and payment systems channel,  ATMIA’s ongoing participation in various industry groups such as The Federal Reserve Faster Payments Task Force, the U.S. Payments Forum and others to ensure the needs of our industry receive appropriate consideration. In addition, ATMIA USA is working on a number of issues that affect the industry including Operation Choke Point  and advocating for ATM operator/acquirer routing choice.

The most consuming issue right now in Canada is Anti Money Laundering (AML) in Quebec and the media. There have been a number of negative articles in Quebec’s media over the past several months – targeting ATMs for laundering money. The activity has been focused on ATMs that did not display the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF) seal of approval. The AMF has taken action by shutting down 10 ATMs that did not display the seal.
ATMIA, working with the Chamber of Quebec and Hill & Knowlton, has issued a statement to clarify that this is a local issue and does not reflect on the entire industry. ATMIA is now working with Hill & Knowlton to develop a proactive program to ensure we keep out in front of this issue.
