DUKE TEAM AMONG RECIPIENTS OF $46.8M IN GRANTS FROM DOD

A team of Duke researchers is one of 19 to receive grant funding through the Department of Defense's Minerva Research Initiative. These three- to five-year awards support basic research in social and behavioral sciences on topics relevant to U.S. national security. Duke's topic area is the Social Impact of Technological Change, led by principal investigator Alexander Volfovsky.

SUPREME COURT DECLINES TO LIFT LOWER COURT TITLE IX BLOCK IN 10 STATES

Last week, the Supreme Court maintained several lower court rulings blocking Title IX implementation in 10 states. The high court declined a petition from the Justice Department to allow the Biden administration to enforce portions of a new rule that includes protections from discrimination for transgender students under Title IX while legal proceedings continue. The regulation went into effect earlier this month.

SAVE PLAN STATUS RAISES CONFUSION AMONG BORROWERS

A federal appeals court this week declined to clarify its order on President Joe Biden's SAVE plan for income-based student loan repayments. The latest in the legal battles surrounding the SAVE plan, the order blocked the Biden administration’s SAVE plan and raised questions about the Education Department’s authority to forgive loans under other repayment plans as well.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS WRITE LETTERS TO UNIVERSITIES CAUTIONING STUDENT SAFETY UPON RETURNS TO CAMPUS

Two committee chairs, Representative Virginia Foxx (R-NC) of the House Education and the Workforce Committee and Representative Jason Smith (R-MO) of the Ways and Means Committee, wrote letters to several universities this week saying institutions are expected to be ready to “prevent a resurgence of disruptions on campus” and “antisemitic harassment” as students return to their campuses. The universities and affiliates that received the letters include Barnard College, UC Berkeley, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, MIT, Northwestern, Rutgers, UCLA, and the University of Pennsylvania. Democrat Ranking Member Bobby Scott (D-VA) of the House Education and Workforce Committee also penned an open letter on the subject, urging campus leaders to ensure that they are "equipped to create safe and healthy learning environments for students and faculty ahead of the upcoming academic year."
