Showcasing Tallahassee Innovation at the 2024 MDSM Conference
|
🧲🚀 The entrepreneurial spirit is magnetizing!
OEV's Business Development Team showcased why Tallahassee-Leon County is the Magnetic Capital of the World
at the Motor, Drive Systems & Magnetics (MDSM) Conference in Orlando! They connected with industry experts, explored emerging technologies, and highlighted the incredible potential of our region for businesses engaged in magnetics technologies and applied sciences.
OEV hosted a reception to close out Day 1 of the conference. During the festivities, Director Keith Bowers shared insights on Tallahassee-Leon County's approach to innovation and the common denominator in science and business. On Day 2 of the conference, we heard how local entrepreneur Jeff Whalen of MagCorp has made Tallahassee-Leon County a force field for accessible magnetics product development.
Thanks to all the trailblazers at #MDSM2024 for an electrifying ⚡ week!

Broadband Access is Growing in Leon County
|
OEV leads the Local Broadband Technology Planning Team’s (LTPT) efforts to
|
- pursue opportunities to extend broadband access to areas that are unserved, underserved, or have no service in Leon County;
-
identify State and Federal funding allocated to broadband expansion; and
- support Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in pursuing funding opportunities.
|
OEV and the LTPT have successfully obtained State and Federal dollars to this end. Most recently, the State has awarded $6.5 million
to Comcast Cable Communications, LLC, to support broadband expansion projects in Leon County’s rural areas—with total project costs representing $15 million in new broadband investment over the next two years.
OEV is the local lead for these efforts because of the importance broadband has with education and workforce development, business recruitment and retention, and business development and expansion, as well as the alignment with the Economic Development Strategic Plan and Targeted Industries (which include (1) Applied Sciences & Innovation, (2) Manufacturing & Transportation/Logistics, (3) Professional Services & Information Technology, and (4) Health Care).
More detailed information will be presented at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on February 20.
