News from the Northeast

April 4, 2017

Message from Paulette Black
Vice President, WRJ Northeast District

Mishnah Pesachim 10:5 (and from the Haggadah)
“In every generation, a person is obligated to see him or herself as though s/he came forth from Egypt.”
We celebrate Passover as a commemoration of our liberation by God from slavery in Egypt and our freedom as a nation under the leadership of Moses. As we gather around our Seder tables, let us all recount our own family histories and immigration stories. As we retell the Haggadah story, it is a time for us to turn our hearts to the current refugee crisis – the worst crisis since World War II. It is also time to turn our hearts to discuss fair and just U.S. immigration policies. Passover is a holiday that really connects us to our past, our present, and our future.
How is WRJ addressing the refugee crisis and fair and just immigration policies?
At Fried Leadership Conference, resources were shared in a social advocacy workshop to help your sisterhoods get involved in standing together to support refugees.

– Will you stand #WithRefugees? Visit their website and sign the petition.

– I Am A Migrant. Go to iamamigrant.org and tell a migrant’s story.

– Stand Up For Someone’s Rights. Visit standup4humanrights and take the pledge.

What can you do as a sisterhood leader encourage your community to get involved?
In 2015, Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto came together to sponsor Syrian refugee families to come to Canada. Working with the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society (JIAS), Temple members raised money, collected household items and clothes, and did many other things to help make the transition to life in Toronto go smoothly. You can read Rabbi Michael Satz’s article HERE.
Holy Blossom Temple continues to be an active presence in its refugee community. Senior Rabbi Yael Splansky organized the Rings of Peace around seven local area mosques. READ MORE about Rings of Peace.
I am very proud of the work at my own synagogue (Beth El Temple Center, Belmont, MA) and its partnership with RIAC (Refugee and Immigrant Assistance Center, Boston, MA). Over the past two years, we have welcomed families at Logan Airport, helped them settle into their new homes with donations of food, furniture and clothing, and – most of all – several of our congregants have established ongoing friendships with new families. We have many wonderful stories to share. We would love to hear about the work and outreach you are doing at your synagogue and sisterhood. Please email me at Paulette.Black@hmhco.com.
I wish you a meaningful, joyous Passover – giving you the opportunity to connect with family and friends, to share your stories and to find new meaning in celebrating our freedom this Passover.

Memories from Fried Leadership Conference

After having many different WRJ experiences including the Centennial Symposium, an area event, a Shabbaton, District Conventions, and the WRJ Assemblies in San Diego and Orlando, we made plans to attend our first Fried Leadership Conference. Each of these previous experiences was a WOW time. We were hoping for more of the same…and we were not disappointed.
It was great to reconnect with old friends, to make new friends, and to learn from our sisters. We attended an array of workshops from WRJ Basics to Genealogy and the history of the Moise Family, from social justice to alternative forms of leadership. We learned from the workshop leaders, and we learned from each other. In between we met with other presidents and area directors and sat and schmoozed day and night.
Visiting the old cemetery at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE) was an experience that made the visit to and the talk there all the more meaningful. Havdalah in the old sanctuary surrounded by our sisters was beautiful.
We would strongly recommend Fried Leadership Conference to everyone. There was a wide variety of workshops available, skill and content. There is something for everyone. Hope to see you all in Nashville!

I had high expectations going into the 2017 Fried Leadership Conference in Charleston. Having attended a number of biennials, assemblies and district conventions, I had a good idea of what to expect as far as the schedule and pace of the weekend’s activities. I have always loved the camaraderie, learning and prayer, and when I learned that Fried was to be in Charleston, I couldn’t resist.
The conference did not disappoint. It was wonderful to reconnect with the familiar faces from previous WRJ weekends as well as meeting new women at each meal, workshop, and service. At each point in the schedule, no matter what we were doing, I would find an empty seat and make a new friend. The conversations and bonding were easy and numerous. I thoroughly enjoyed the educational nature and real world applications of the workshops. There were so many to choose from, everything from the nominating process to engaging through social media. I returned with much to share and a reinforced love of Sisterhood and WRJ. I can’t wait for Nashville!!!
