Lynne Maquat awarded 2021 Wolf Prize in Medicine

Lynne Maquat, the J. Lowell Orbison Distinguished Service Alumni Professor in biochemistry and biophysics and the director of Rochester’s Center for RNA Biology, was honored with the 2021 Wolf Prize in Medicine. The acclaimed international award is given to outstanding scientists from around the world for achievements that benefit humanity.

Then and now: Being a student during times of great change

Although they are from different generations, Johanna Matulonis ’23 (pictured above with a friend) and Irene Colle Kaplan ’58 have both attended the University during periods of great change. They discuss their respective experiences living on the River Campus while history was being made—Matulonis during the pandemic and Kaplan when the men’s and women’s campuses first merged.

Virtual Alumni Book Club presents The Vanishing Half

Starting later this month, the virtual Alumni Book Club will begin reading The Vanishing Half, a novel by Brit Bennett that appears on the New York Times Best Books of 2020. Sign up and join the discussion to connect with fellow University of Rochester alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff.

Susan B. Anthony Legacy Awards

The Susan B. Anthony Legacy Awards are an over 60-year tradition honoring exceptional women from the University of Rochester community and their achievements. This year’s professional women’s leadership award winners are University Trustee, Kathy Waller ’80, ’83S (MBA), retired chief financial officer at the Coca-Cola Company, and Jennifer Muniak, an assistant professor of medicine. An Nguyen ’22, Cindy Le ’21, Ximena Reyes Torres ’21, Victoria Liverpool ’22, and Denise Navarrete ’22 were also named recipients.

U.S. News & World Report has announced that among the full-time MBA programs ranked within the top-50, Simon is the most diverse MBA program (#1) in a list of highly-ranked public and private business schools.

Only three women have received the Nobel Prize in Physics—Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD) was the third
| |
In 2018, the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Donna Strickland ’89 (PhD) and former University of Rochester engineering professor Gérard Mourou. Together, they developed a way to amplify the power of lasers, ushering in applications in medicine, optics, imaging, research, and other areas. Rochester has a total of 13 Nobel laureates—with Strickland being the third woman ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics and the first woman laureate in University history.
