Explore New Courses Delve into Gardens History Learn About Our Core Collections The origins of the Longwood plant collection date back to 1798, when the Peirce family began planting trees on the land. Many of these historic trees can still be found in Peirce’s Park, and represent the oldest cultivated section of the Gardens. Mr. du Pont continued building his collection of trees and favorite plants from around the world over the next 40 years. The original collection established by Mr. du Pont provided the template for our modern collections and many of these plants are now considered part of our core collections, prioritized as they are important to our overall collection and to the preservation of our horticultural heritage and legacy; because they serve specific horticultural themes and programs; and because they serve the mission of Mr. du Pont.  Learn More Your Moment at Longwood Submit Your Favorite Longwood Moments With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, we want to hear your love stories! Submit them through our #LongwoodLove initiative on our website or use #LongwoodLove when posting online.  This week, enjoy a moment by Member Jessica G.: My husband (then boyfriend) took me for my first time to Longwood Gardens and I immediately fell in love!!! It became like my "Disney World!" During our relationship we would go as often as we could (we live towards the southern coast of New Jersey). In December of 2012, he bought tickets for our first Christmas festival which was spectacular. Also because that was when he proposed!! To my complete surprise off in the middle of the meadow walk he took my hand and asked me that amazing question to which I said yes!!!! We now enjoy Longwood with our children. It will always hold a special place in my heart and with my family.
