Happy Advent!
Happy Advent!
Happy Advent!
This is a season where we make ourselves ready for the coming of Christ in our spiritual lives, and we are getting ready to see relatives, exchange gifts, and indulge in a whole host deliciously unhealthy foods. For many this can also be a difficult time. Everyone has that one uncle, or niece or nephew that will not fail to bring up that one sensitive subject that everyone wishes would be avoided at all costs. Sometimes family gathering can turn into blow out arguments over politic, or other inconsequential topics that have little to do with Christmas, or showing family members that they are loved. So many times have I seen people become furious with loved ones over minor things. I am guilty of this as well. Sometimes I’ll find myself upset with a person that I love, and I’ll confront them over something small, because I am too afraid to tell them how I am really feeling. When you start to get stressed out about Christmas remember two things. First of all, it’s not Christmas yet. Advent is a whole season unto itself where we can practice being still and getting ready for the miraculous things in our lives. Secondly, Christmas is a time where can celebrate the coming of Christ with our families, faults and all. You can still love your Uncle Bob, or your sister Cherrie’s kid even if you don’t agree with them. This year try taking a step back, be quiet and find a way to say I love you. My friends, it’s Advent. Be still and know you are loved.
Blessings,
Fr. Nick

 Advent and Music

We have entered now into the season of Advent, a time that is special and set aside to prepare for the coming of Christ.  We do intentional things with music to signify this time and to remind us in the quiet time of Sunday mornings that we are waiting with bated breath, and that this season is different from any other season of the church year.
We do not sing the Gloria, that chant is saved to return again with great joy on Christmas Eve; instead we sing the Trisagion, a stark and simple chant, asking for mercy.  We pare down the service by speaking, instead of singing, the memorial acclamation and great AMEN.  The Sanctus changes to a more somber setting.  The hymns come from the Advent section of the hymnal, pages 53-76, all having the theme of the coming birth.  And so , we wait and we prepare.
