Supporting Your Student's Transition to Duke

We encourage families to think critically about how to best support your student during their transition to college. In partnership with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), New Student & Family Programs developed the video above to help you prepare for some of the changes your student is about to face and reflect on how to support your student in the coming months. Parent & Family Orientation
Webinars
Parent and Family Orientation begins this week and continues through mid-August! Orientation consists of a series of webinars, ensuring that families begin their transition as Duke families before students move in. We encourage all families to preview the schedule and register for each webinar. All webinars will be recorded and posted to the parent and family website 48 hours after the webinar airs.
Family Farewell
At the end of Move-In Day, August 20, there will be an opportunity for you to meet other families and Duke staff at our Family Farewell on Saturday evening.
Students will begin full-day orientation events on Sunday, August 21. Accordingly, we ask families to plan their departure for this day so that we can orient your student to life at Duke.

New Student Move-In Process
To kickoff their Orientation experience, new students will move in to their residence halls on Saturday, August 20. In mid-July, your student will receive detailed move-in instructions, including a map of campus and a specific move-in time.

Summer Student EmailsPlease ensure that your student is checking their Duke email accounts (@duke.edu) regularly. They will continue receiving emails throughout the summer with helpful reminders, details about deadlines, and necessary tasks to complete before arriving to Duke. If students encounter any difficulty accessing their email, students should contact the Office of Information Technology (OIT).
We encourage families to lean into the transition and empower your student to take the lead in completing their summer tasks.

Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP)
The 2022-2023 open enrollment for the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan (SMIP) began earlier this month. Every student must enroll in or waive the SMIP coverage by September 15, 2022. Students received an email with more information and instructions to their Duke email account.
The 2022-23 Duke SMIP is underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of North Carolina. Visit this website for plan details. To waive coverage, a student must be insured by a health insurance plan that meets specific criteria.
To make the best decision for your family, please call your insurance company and ask if you have access to health care services at Duke Health locations, and what (if any) co-payments, co-insurance, and deductibles will be your responsibility.

Fall Tuition & Fees
Guest Access to Pay Tuition
To view and pay your student’s tuition bill, your student must grant you guest access to their DukeHub account. Learn more about gaining “Guest Access” here.
Payment Plans
For those families who are interested, the monthly payment plan allows your student’s tuition bill to be split into 3-5 payments per semester —- 6-10 payments over the academic year. Using this handy worksheet ("Nelnet Budget Worksheet for First Year Undergraduates"), your family can estimate your monthly payment if you were to opt into the payment plan.
The next deadline to enroll in a payment plan—consisting of 4 installments—is July 28. Families can still enroll for a payment plan with 3 installments if they enroll by August 23.

COVID-19 Fall Planning
We know families have questions about the fall semester. The University is continuing to monitor COVID-19 and will provide more information to incoming students and families as needed. Stay tuned.

Advising and Registration
By now your students should have heard from a contact in Trinity or Pratt in anticipation of course registration for the fall semester. Each first-year student will be assigned a registration period on either July 12 or 14. Students can find their registration window on the registration page in DukeHub. Before that, students will have the ability to prepare for registration by placing courses of interest into a virtual shopping cart. Shopping carts are now open.
Learn more about common Pratt family questions and a brief overview of the advising and first-year experience of students in each college in the Parent and Family Blue Book.
