Dear Friends,
I hope you had a good start to the new school year and are enjoying the slightly cooler temperatures. The end of summer and beginning of fall is one of the busiest times of the year for all of us at FSU CARD. We have been busy answering emails, calls, and online requests from families and schools as they start the new school year. Fall is also the perfect time for us to reach out and ask all our registered clients to fill out an annual update form, so we can keep our database up-to-date with current information.
We have several free training opportunities coming up for families and educators. Be sure to look through all the fliers listed below and register for the one(s) that look interesting to you. With Halloween just around the corner, we have a great resource from the Marcus Institute that is included in this fall edition of our newsletter. We’d love for you to share any helpful Halloween tips, or fun pictures of you or your family member all decked out in their Halloween or fall costumes. Look for a post on our social media platforms in the coming weeks where you can share your ideas and pictures.
We hope to see you at some of our upcoming events and wish you all the very best this fall.
Sincerely,

It was always Winston Brock’s dream to be a volunteer interpreter at Tallahassee’s Apalachee-Spanish living history museum, Mission San Luis. As a Lively Transition student eight years ago, one of their staff helped make his dream come true by getting him a volunteer position with the mission. Since then, Winston has continued to grow in his position by steadfastly increasing and updating his knowledge of the mission’s history and the people that inhabited it in the middle 1600’s.
The mission is made up of several buildings and structures including the council house, church and friary, the Spanish house, and the El Castillo de San Luis otherwise known as the fort. As a visitor to the mission approaching the fort, you will more than likely be greeted by Winston as he stands guard outside in his replica seventeenth century interpreter’s costume. He portrays the fort’s sergeant of the guards by helping protect the fort from its enemies. He can tell you all about his uniform made of linen and cotton, and the gear strapped to him such as a replica rapier, canteen, and haversack. He can also eloquently narrate the history of the fort, its use, and all the exhibited items. Some of his other responsibilities at the fort are raising the colors every morning, training new recruits on halberd drills, clearing the range when a cannon firing demonstration is about to start, and assisting with homeschool days and other annual events at the mission. Recently, he’s been learning more about the other buildings on site and their history so that he can contribute as an interpreter in these other locations. Winston plans on being at the mission for many years to come so if you’re interested in seeing him in action, mainly Tuesday through Saturday, he will be there to greet you with a smile and teach you everything he knows about the fort and Mission San Luis.
Back in July of this year, Mission San Luis also became the newest addition to CARD‘s Autism-Friendly Business (AFB) Training initiative. Autism Consultant, Allison Leatzow, provided a training to all staff to learn how to better support visitors who may have autism visiting the mission as well as any employees and volunteers on the spectrum. Any business or entity that would like to have this training can go to https://fsucard.com/community/ for more information and to apply for this free service.
