Chicks may make you think of spring, but for so many 4-H’ers, it’s a several-month investment during their time in the 4-H Chick Chain until they sell their fully-grown chickens in the fall. This commitment starts with a box of fuzzy, peeping chicks and ends with ribbons, banners and new life skills.
The 4-H Chick Chain Program gives students a hands-on opportunity to raise and care for poultry while learning valuable lessons in responsibility, record-keeping and animal husbandry.

Throughout her 4-H career, Garrell excelled in every area she pursued, leading to her selection as one of 15 Haslam Leadership Scholars and a Peyton Manning Scholar among more than 6,000 other applicants.
“I could not be more grateful. Being selected as both a Haslam Leadership Scholar and a Peyton Manning Scholar is incredibly humbling, deeply inspiring and truly a dream come true,” Garrell says. “When former 4-H’er, Alex Crockett, won the Peyton Manning Scholarship in 2014, it left a lasting impression on me and motivated me to strive for greater growth in both leadership and citizenship. Then, when former 4-H’er, Cade Simmons, was awarded the scholarship last year, it reaffirmed my belief that 4-H has the power to shape the lives of its members in remarkable ways.”

When 4-H Alumnus was invited to give a TED Talk, she titled her speech, “What’s Your Leadership Language?” and focused, in great part, on her leadership journey, which began in 4-H with leadership roles at the regional and state councils, including Tennessee 4-H Governor.

Justin Cross, a native of Knox County, grew up on a small hobby farm surrounded by sheep, agriculture and a strong sense of community.
From an early age, 4-H seemed like a natural fit, but what began as a predictable childhood involvement quickly became a transformative experience that would shape his education, career path and personal mission.
