Hiring Urban Forestry Seasonal Staff, Apply Now!

Urban Forestry is filling several seasonal positions for 2019, including Park Tree Inventory Coordinators, an Elm Monitor, and Tree Establishers. Visit https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/portlandor for current job posting information.

Portland Parks & Recreation Urban Forestry is seeking seasonal staff to work with its Outreach and Science group conducting work with tree inventory, monitoring, and stewardship activities. Our Operations group is also seeking summer Tree Establishers.

Multiple positions are open for Park Tree Inventory Coordinator and one position is open for a Seasonal Elm Monitor under the Community Service Aide II job classification. You may apply to one or both positions simultaneously. Work starts in May and runs for 5-6 months. Pay starts at $17/hour. Read more detailed position descriptions here.

Multiple positions are also open for Tree Establishers under the Seasonal Maintenance Worker (SMW) job classification. Work begins in early May and continues until mid-October. Pay starts at $14.64/hour. Do you like sharing your tree knowledge? Do you want to lead a tree walk, but are not sure how to get started? Urban Forestry offers the Tree Walk Leader Training to help you lead compelling Tree Walks in your neighborhood!
The training is led by Dave Hedberg, author of From Stumptown to Tree Town. He will teach you how to lead a fun and interesting tree walk and explain how great walks are organized. After that, everyone will get a chance to go outside to practice leading a walk in a local park.
Tree walks are a great way to share what you know about the urban forest and to get new people excited about trees. 
People of all knowledge and experience levels are welcome. Just bring your interest in trees and a passion for educating others.

Heritage Tree #1

Heritage Tree Workshop

Heritage Trees are trees that have been formally recognized by City Council for their unique size, age, historical or horticultural significance.
Heritage Trees are protected by City Code; once designated, no Heritage Tree can be removed without the consent of the Urban Forestry Commission and City Council.

There are over 300 Heritage Trees throughout Portland, and new trees are added each year. At this workshop, we will learn more about what makes these trees so special, and how you can nominate a Heritage Tree of your own!

Yearly Tree Planting Reminder: Each year, Urban Forestry sends a reminder to all properties who were required to plant trees as a result of an issued Tree Removal and Replanting permit. Title 11 Trees, the City's Tree Code, requires that trees be planted to mitigate the loss of services caused by tree removal, ensuring that Portland's urban forest will be sustained and improved over time. If you received this notice and have any questions, please contact us.

The Green Schoolyards Collective is Launching: The collective aims to creates a more formal connection between organizations involved in various aspects of greening schoolyards. With 46 members to date, they will soon begin crafting strategies for placing more gardens, nature play spaces, outdoor classrooms and green infrastructure projects on school properties. Membership is free. Attend the kick-off event on Tuesday, March 12, from 9 am to noon. Find out more information here.

Green Inequity Plagues U.S. Cities According to Study:
Portland is one of 10 cities included in a new study from the University of British Columbia that looks at the link between access to urban green space and socioeconomic indicators. The study finds that those with some degree of affluence and/or advanced educations also "...enjoy more immediate access to parks, trees and other types of greenery-filled spaces than those less wealthy and educated."
