UNT Celebrates Pride Month
   CELEBRATING PRIDE MONTH
This June, UNT celebrates Pride Month! As a university for all, we strive to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, feels safe, valued and respected.
Pride Month commemorates the June 1969 Stonewall riots — a turning point in outlawing discriminatory practices and catalyzing the gay rights movement — and the first Pride Parade in June 1970, when activists marched through Manhattan to recognize the one-year anniversary of the riots. Today’s celebrations include similar parades and festivals. If you’re in the Denton area this month, join the community for a series of events at PRIDENTON through Saturday, June 29, and unite in uplifting LGBTQ+ voices.
Here on campus, LGBTQ+ student groups are celebrating and building supportive communities. Read more about the student-led initiatives of The Space, the A Team, LUNA and GLAD.

   OBSERVING JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States by honoring the events of June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom. Three years ago, Juneteenth became an official federal holiday, largely due to the efforts of UNT alumna Opal Lee.
The university will be closed Wednesday, June 19, which means classes will not be held and there will be no issue of UNT Weekly

   SOLE FINALIST
In case you missed it, the UNT System Board of Regents has announced the selection of Dr. Harrison Keller as sole finalist for UNT president. Since 2019, he has served as commissioner and chief executive officer of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and is responsible for facilitating the state’s strategic plan for higher education.
Under state law, a sole finalist for president must be named at least 21 days before a permanent appointment is made. The selection is expected to be finalized the week of July 1.
