Dear students,
As you prepare for the beginning of winter term at the University of Oregon, we want to make you aware of a potential labor situation that may affect campus.
The UO is currently negotiating a new contract with the union that represents graduate student employees (GEs), and the university administration is planning for the possibility of a strike. GEs hold a wide range of jobs, including administrative, research support, and teaching responsibilities in academic courses.
Although negotiations are continuing and we hope an agreement is reached quickly, the union has announced its intent to strike with a projected start date of January 17, 2024.
University administration has developed comprehensive plans for the possibility of a strike and is committed to meeting the needs of our students. If a strike occurs, activities on campus are expected to continue, with some modifications to the instructors who will cover classes or discussion sections.
Please monitor and carefully read university emails and Canvas messages for specific information about your own courses, particularly ones where graduate employees play a role.
We respect the right of GEs to conduct a legal strike and hope to reach a fair and equitable agreement quickly. Meanwhile, the UO is a public institution of higher education with the responsibility to provide the best education possible for students. Serving students is our top priority.
As more information is available, updates will be communicated and posted on both pages.
Best,
Kris Winter, EdD
Interim Vice President for Student Life
