Farewell N. Fenwick Avenue
There is now an empty space where our school name was once so proudly displayed near the intersection of Lombard and Interstate. De La Salle North Catholic and the pride of Knight Nation has now reached the end of the road at the historical Kenton building. For fifteen years the Kenton building, owned by PPS, was home to dedicated faculty and staff and all the amazing Knight Nation students and their families. Many stories took place between those walls, and I know that these sweet memories will live on for decades to come.
As we move past this chapter in the school’s history, with all the emotion that includes, it is my hope that the Knight Nation community looks towards the future with much optimism for continued growth and boundless success at our state-of-the-art new campus. Fall 2021 represents the rebirth of DLSNC, and YOU are personally invited to be a part of the festivities when our new doors open. Our community is not complete without the inclusion of faculty, staff, students, parents, donors, corporate partners, and friends who support, advocate for and love all that is good in Knight Nation.
On Friday, June 18, 2021, Knight Nation turns off the lights for the last time on N. Fenwick Avenue. Farewell old friend!

| Temporary Location for the Summer
Construction progress continues at DLSNC’s new campus in NE Portland, and we are so excited to commence the 2021-22 school year there. While we eagerly await the completion of our new facility, DLSNC will be located temporarily in PPS’s Columbia Annex building from June 18 to August 15.

A Graduation Miracle for the Class of 2021
Amazing news arrived the afternoon of Friday, May 28—Covid case counts in Multnomah County had reached the point that larger outdoor gatherings were permissible. After some quick regrouping, and with the generous participation of the University of Portland, Principal Tim Joy was able to send out a gleeful announcement to students, families, faculty, and staff that graduation would be an in-person event for the Class of 2021! What a miracle to end the unusual senior year of what has become known as “Virtually, the Best Class Ever.”
The Class of 2021 gathered in person the afternoon of June 5—their first time together in 16 months—for a traditional graduation ceremony held on the East Quad at the University of Portland. The ceremony included addresses by the Class' two valedictorians, A'Chy'Gei Motley and Hedid Rojas Salinas. In addition, the following awards were announced:
- Salutatorian Award: Rowan-Skylar Chavez McCormack and Charly Maxwell Pettit
- Faith Award: Shyanne Maldonado-Straus
- The Gerald Bitz Service Award: Lien Hoa Thi Nguyen
- The Community Award: Zhada Monique Allen
- The St. Joseph the Worker Award: Chevelle Faith Boyd
- The De La Salle Award: Janaé Star Boyd, Princeton De'Shawn McKinney, and Charly Maxwell Pettit
The day brought it all—rain, wind, sun, church bells, and most importantly 300 beaming smiles from the 56 graduates and their families. Click here for more photos of this special day.

Two Staff Members Named Lasallian Educators of the Year at School End
Every year DLSNC recognizes the Lasallian Educator of the Year, selected by secret ballot from all faculty and staff. The award is given to the individual who most embodies the 12 Lasallian values (gravity, silence, humility, prudence, wisdom, patience, reserve, gentleness, zeal, vigilance, piety, generosity).
In 2021, for the first time ever, two individuals received the award—Alyssa Frangipani, Director of Lasallian Youth Ministry; and Edgar Quintero, Facilities Manager. Ever cheerful, helpful, and energetic, both Alyssa and Edgar were unfailing in their positive outlooks during the intense challenges brought on by the pandemic, and they each readily pitched in in areas far outside their job descriptions.

Knight Life 20-21 Academic Awards Celebrate Students' Heart and Grit
For 20 years, the Knight Life Academic Awards has made public to our families the special quality of our Lasallian community—teachers are the older sister or older brother to their students. This year’s award ceremony was held virtually on May 19. Regardless of the two-dimensional, miniaturized aspect of this year's school relationships via a screen, teachers, counselors, LYM ministers, CWSP supervisors, and ARC tutors cheered their charges with clever shout-outs such as:
- The "Text My Teacher Award"—because sometimes you have to reach your teacher on a 24-hour cycle
- I Can and Will Do It!—For being an all-around great student, who is always willing to read aloud, share an idea, or ask a question—you helped our community learn together
- Enthusiasm—for helping fellow students and always participating in class in the most difficult freshman year ever
- The Breaking the Silence Award—for always being willing to unmute and interact in Spanish when no one else will!
In a wondrous irony, amid the difficulties of a pandemic year when attendance was challenging, five students in Semester 1 and 15 students in Semester 2 achieved the Perfect Attendance award, by far the most the school has ever given.
And so it went . . . a night of Knights, feats of grit and wit, proclamations of persistence and passion, and through it all . . . the tell of the Lasallian heart . . . "the more loving you are to the young, the greater will be the effects of God's grace" (St. La Salle, Meditation on St. Barnabas).
