Setting Our Students Up for Future Success

It's been quite a school year for the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP). For almost 20 years, DLSNC has had the privilege of working with our corporate partners to provide all students with a work study placement. When the pandemic hit, we were faced with the same challenge that so many of you were—how to reimagine our program in a virtual world.

We needed to create a CWSP model that would be both meaningful for our partners and our students, with the goal of setting our students up for future success. Because of the CWSP team, the commitment and flexibility of our partners, and the resilience of our students, we were able to do just that.

We are so thankful to have 42 partner companies hosting 76 of our students virtually, conducting weekly Meet & Greets. The new approach not only helped solve our need to be remote, but it also provided an enhanced platform for partners and students to get to know one another on a deeper level, to understand the various departments within a business, and to ask questions.

Our very own Ms. Waibel teaches a career readiness class for our students who are not in job placements this year. This class has been instrumental in ensuring that our students maintain their work skills and has given them a platform to engage in meaningful discussions about their future career aspirations. All freshmen are completing their Summer Employment Foundation Academy (SEFA) training throughout the year to be fully prepared for future placements. Lastly, Board of Trustees and Ambassador Board members are hosting virtual industry panels for our freshmen to get a taste of the corporate world this year.

We have already started to envision and plan for the fall semester, incorporating the lessons we have learned this year, and look forward to unveiling what the future may look like. Until then, we want to extend our gratitude and appreciation to all our partners. Because of you, our students have not missed a beat—they have continued to develop relationships, they have a better understanding of the importance of creating a network, and are prepared for what the workforce may look like today, tomorrow, and in the future.

Liz Leon Esparza '23 works virtually for The Standard. She has a remote work setup at home and works four hours each Wednesday. Liz says, “Now that we are online through CWSP, things have definitely been different than when we were in person. The thing I enjoy the most about the CWSP virtual program is the experience. Working from home is challenging but is also a way of learning. It gives us another perspective as an intern to see what it's like to work from home and not in a building. With the CWSP virtual program, we are getting to experience and learn new skills in a different way.”

Students Celebrate el Día de Los Reyes Magos

Every year, upon our return from winter break, I celebrate el Día de Los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day—also known as Ephiphany) with my Spanish classes. We usually have a lesson on how the day is celebrated in Spanish-speaking countries and then we share a sweet treat, a Rosca de Reyes, which is an oval-shaped sweet pastry. I usually bring in one for each class. “Rosca” means wreath and “reyes” means kings. The Rosca de Reyes has an oval shape to symbolize a crown and has a small doll inside, which represents baby Jesus. The doll figure symbolizes the hiding of the infant Jesus from King Herod’s troops. Traditionally, roscas are adorned with dried and candied fruits to symbolize the many jewels that a crown would have. The person who gets the slice with the doll must host a party on Día de la Candelaria in February.

This year, due to remote learning, I shared a Rosca Digital, (made with Google Slides) with my students. Each digital rosca was presented during my online classes and the students had the opportunity to choose a slice. I would move the pieces and each student would see if they got the baby Jesus or not. Each rosca had three dolls in it.

Students really enjoyed being able to participate in this tradition, albeit digitally, and I was glad that we found a way to recreate the community experience of sharing a rosca while we are distance learning.

Jo'sean Joseph '21 was featured in a fundraising appeal email from our CWSP Partner, Friends of Trees. In it, he says:

"I would like to thank Blueprint, Friends of Trees, all the organizations that have helped me and given me the inspiration and courage to continue this path, to make sure to inspire other people, especially people of color, to become something great and put them into fields you don't really see people of color in."
