LLS Campus to Officially Reopen on August 2
We share today some important updates regarding campus reopening and what to expect in the next few weeks. As always, reopening plans follow public health orders and are subject to change in light of evolving guidance.
As noted in last week’s Community Advisory, all members of the university community must wear masks indoors at LLS and all LMU campuses, regardless of vaccination status. This is in accordance with L.A. County’s reinstated order that went into effect yesterday, Sunday, July 18. Updates will be provided as available.
The LLS campus will be closed to all but designated essential employees on Tuesday, July 27 and Wednesday, July 28. On those days, Loyola Law School will host approximately 90 recent graduates who will sit for the bar exam, occupying several separate rooms on our campus during the day. In the evening, LLS will host important pre-matriculation activities. To focus on these critical events and ensure proper cleaning and other safety protocols during and in between events, we must close campus to everyone except our scheduled bar exam takers, our scheduled incoming students, and designated essential employees.
The LLS campus will officially reopen to students, faculty, and staff on Monday, August 2, 2021, subject to evolving health protocols.
Effective August 2, LLS will reopen to our pre-pandemic hours as follows:
- Administrative and academic buildings: Six days per week, Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
- Rains Library: Schedule available on website
- Lack Reading Room: Seven days per week, 24 hours per day

Please note that campus access will continue to be limited to students, faculty, staff, and approved visitors. In addition, LMU’s Environmental Health and Safety Department continues to work with our LLS COVID Safety Liaisons, Marianne Carlton and Joe Archie, to ensure offices, classrooms, and other campus spaces are aligned with Cal/OSHA and related public health requirements.
Employees who have been working remotely should continue working with their supervisors on plans for returning to the office and working on campus.
Fall semester classes are expected to be held primarily in-person, with some exceptions, when they start on Monday, August 16. More information about specific class status will be available during registration, which began today for some students. Additional updates will be provided in the coming weeks.
LLS COVID-19 Testing Center Update In anticipation of our reopening, the university requires all students, faculty and staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by August 9, 2021. Please submit your vaccination documentation via Vax LMU by July 26, 2021. Any members of our community who are not vaccinated, pursuant to an approved medical or religious exemption, must follow masking protocols and submit to testing at our LLS COVID Testing Center two times each week.
Having completed their training, the LLS COVID Testing Center team is in the process of establishing the LLS Testing Center, which will be located inside the Information Center. During the next two weeks, a soft launch will take place for on-campus for employees who have not registered in Vax LMU. In conjunction with our August 2 reopening, the LLS COVID Testing Center will officially open by appointment only; regular hours of operation are still being evaluated based on the expected demand. Individuals who are not registered in Vax LMU will be contacted to schedule their appointments.
On-Campus Dining Beginning August 16, Sonia’s Café will reopen for weekday operations. As the date approaches, Sonia’s will share more details regarding menu offerings and hours of operation. We’re sure many people will have detailed questions about food options as campus comes back to life. We are still determining details and working with evolving guidance, but will keep you posted as best we can.
On-Campus Events Internal meetings and events are now generally permitted, and some events with external guests have also resumed. As you are likely aware, L.A. County is seeing an increase in the COVID-19 transmission rate, including the presence of the highly transmittable Delta variant, so please note that changing health conditions may impact events. We strongly recommend that events include virtual contingencies. Please make event reservations with Information & Support Services for the fall semester using the 25Live Scheduling Portal.
Campus Parking Parking at LLS will be free of charge through the month of August. Please stay tuned for further updates regarding September and beyond.

LLS students are required to submit their vaccination documentation by July 26, 2021 and be fully vaccinated by August 9, 2021. The university has provided a mechanism for students to request a vaccination exemption based on qualifying medical or religious reasons. The deadline for such requests was July 15, 2021. More information about exemptions for students, including what information must submitted, is available online.
To protect our community’s health and facilitate our safe return to campus, the university is asking that all faculty and staff be fully vaccinated prior to returning to campus. Please review further guidance from Human Resources regarding faculty and staff vaccination guidelines.
