More than just a career
For 2023 TU Distinguished Alumnus Danny Chappelle Williams (JD ’91), choosing to attend law school was more than just a career decision. Williams was inspired to attend TU Law by his uncle, Judge Carlos J. Chappelle (JD ’80), the first Black presiding judge in the 14th District Court in Tulsa. When Chappelle passed, Williams helped to establish a scholarship in his honor. “I would visit during the summers and go to court with Carlos,” Williams said. “I got a chance to see where the law school was, sit in on a couple of classes. TU just seemed like a natural fit to me.”

Committed to the game
Throughout his life, 2023 TU Distinguished Alumnus Dave Rader (BS ’80) has had a passion for football. Rader was quarterback for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and played in the 1976 Independence Bowl. He went on to serve as head football coach at TU from 1988 to 1999. “One of the best things about coaching is that there comes a time where almost every student-athlete changes and becomes more responsible and more mature. From that point, they value their education more, and they recognize more fully the value of being a responsible person and making a positive difference,” Rader said.

Work hard, play hard
Throughout his life, 2023 J. Paschal Twyman Award winner Jim Miller (BS ’66) has abided by the motto: “work hard, play hard.” For almost 40 years, Miller worked with the accounting firm Arthur Andersen, both in their Oklahoma and Portugal branches. “My experience at TU and later in the business world at Arthur Andersen taught me that, to be successful, not only did I need to work hard but I needed to work smarter,” he said. “Always focus on finding a better way to attack a problem, learn from others, and be willing to pass on your approach to others.”

Called to help others
First joining the TU family as an undergraduate, 2023 Ms. Homecoming honoree Schnea Bates-Nealy (BA ’97, MA ’00) went on to pursue graduate work at the university before finally returning to work as an academic counselor. Now assistant director for academics and student success, she works directly with students to ensure they flourish. “Just the other day, I had a student text me and say, 'Ms. Schnea, I don’t know if you remember me, but thank you for making an impact on my life.’ I hadn’t spoken to him in probably 10 years, and it made me want to cry. I thrive on that,” she said.

Temperatures may have been low, but spirits were high when TU students took over Tucker Drive for the annual Homecoming Street Painting party Tuesday evening. This beloved tradition resulted in a few Greek letters, a lot of love for Goldie, tons of TU spirit, and a Gus T or two. Make sure to stop by and check out the artwork while you're on campus this weekend for Homecoming!
