June 12, 2018 | A weekly publication of the National Speech & Debate Association

Dear Coach,

Below, we share details on last minute script updates and your final tournament reminders. Nationals is less than a week away!

High School Interp Script Updates

Don't forget, if you have any script updates you wish to make, you may continue to upload them in Tabroom.com until June 17. Be sure that you have met the following requirements:
  • You have included a photocopy of the original pages with the specific parts of the script performed either highlighted or underlined. Be sure that the pages are in performance order and not page number.
  • Any words added or changed within the rules are clearly indicated in ink on the script.
  • You have uploaded a word processed version of the script - this is particularly important for POI, which may include dozens of individual pages of content.
  • You are prepared to bring the original publication materials with you to Nationals. Students advancing to quarterfinals must turn in the original materials to the bud room by noon on Wednesday.

High School OO and Info Script Updates

Entrants must upload a copy of their manuscript during online registration, signed by the contestant and the coach, certifying the speech is the student’s original work. Updates to the script are permitted on Tabroom.com until June 17. The document must include a complete work cited page in MLA or APA format.

Introducing Pronoun Ribbons

Correct pronoun usage is a crucial step for making the speech and debate community safer and more inclusive. Pronouns are how we identify others in our daily communication, and they are often associated with the gender of the person to whom we are referring, e.g. “she,” “her,” “he,” “his. It is common that we use pronouns to describe a person based on their outward appearance or perceived gender. Mistaking a person’s gender by using the incorrect pronouns can invalidate, disrespect, or threaten the safety of that person. This creates an inhospitable tournament space both in terms of social interaction and competitive success.
This year at the National Tournament, we invite every adult with a nametag to wear custom ribbons provided by the NSDA to identify their pronouns. Ribbons can be picked up along with nametags at registration.

Kickoff Event: Register or Watch Live!

We're partnering with the Broward County Public Schools Active Voice Project to kickoff #Nats18 with a LIVE event at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 16, called Powerful Voices. Meaningful Changes. The event will showcase the importance of empowering students to use their voices. Register TODAY or plan to watch the livestream at www.speechanddebate.org/live.
