Meet Your Online Instructor: Dr. Leslie Knapp

Dr. Leslie Knapp is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology and researches human and non-human primate genetics and evolutionary biology. She studies how immune genes vary in humans and primates and how gene diversity is generated and maintained via diseases resistance, sexual selection, inbreeding avoidance, and reproductive failure. She is currently working on a collaborative study, supported by the National Science Foundation, on genetics and behavior in wild chimpanzees in Senegal. Dr. Knapp received her Ph.D. from UCLA and began teaching anthropology at the University of Cambridge in 1997, where she established the PrIME genetics laboratory and research group. She now teaches in the Department of Anthropology here at the University of Utah and primarily spends her time conducting research in her new genetics lab, which you can see through the windows on the 5th floor of the Gardner Commons building. Dr. Knapp recently redeveloped the online section of ANTH 1020 (Human Origins: Evolution and Diversity). She also teaches ANTH 2281 (Primates) and ANTH 3283 (Sex and Gender).

50th Anniversary Student Spotlight- Marcela Sanchez

Meet Marcela Sanchez, U of U CSBS 2020 graduate! "I have loved my time in the CSBS; I have learned a lot from my professors and fellow students, not only about the field of Sociology, but also about life. I am a first generation college student and the road to school wasn’t always easy, but I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to study in a compelling and fascinating field. It has given me the opportunity to learn about how change can be brought about in society and how I as an individual can play a role in causing that change. I have acquired a grounded, contextual understanding that allows me to, among many things, explore the most pressing problems of our time and understand the societal, historical forces at work behind these social issues. To me, this perspective is invaluable if we are to come up with compassionate solutions that take into account our shared humanity and get to the root of these issues. My time in the CSBS has given the tools I need to confront these issues on a personal and professional level."
