The Office for Faculty Advancement announces a new faculty professional development initiative launching this fall. The Duke Faculty Academy will bring together a cohort of faculty across schools and disciplines to develop knowledge and tools necessary to form creative solutions to issues that impact the faculty experience.
In its inaugural year, the Academy will guide faculty teams through a program to create innovative projects on one of two themes: 1) Promoting Constructive Engagement With Difficult Topics in an Environment Valuing Free Inquiry and Belonging; or 2) The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on the Faculty Experience.
Regular rank faculty in all schools and university institutes, initiatives & centers (UICs) are eligible for the Faculty Academy. School of Medicine faculty holding primary or secondary appointments in a Basic Science or UIC are eligible to apply.
Applicants may self-nominate or receive a nomination from a peer or unit leader by September 2.

Faculty regularly engage with students from different backgrounds while teaching, advising and mentoring. A number of factors can influence the success of this engagement for both faculty and students, including the learning and mentoring environments faculty create and the way they incorporate inclusive practices into their teaching, mentoring and assessment.
Workshop participants will join their colleagues to discuss effective strategies and tools to create environments where their students can learn and thrive. Participants will also discuss ways to develop practices that prioritize their own wellness as they begin the work of a new academic year.

We offer faculty and leadership development programs and partner with Duke schools, departments and other academic units to enhance faculty growth and success. A diverse faculty — defined broadly as representing a wide range of identities, lived experiences and perspectives — is a prerequisite for excellence and is essential to driving innovation within our scholarly community. We work to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and strive to promote a welcoming academic culture and community that lives up to the Duke values of respect, trust, inclusion, discovery and excellence.
