College, Career, & Job Fair!!
Tuesday, October 29th students had the opportunity to make connections and learn about college tours, programs, scholarships, financial aid and different majors at different universities.
To follow up from the College, Career & Job Fair, Financial Aid night was last night, November 7th. Families had the opportunity to learn about scholarships, apprenticeship programs and Employee tutition assistant programs.
Attendance Information
In years past, students have received purple Unexcused Absence Verification forms when they have been marked absent from the prior day. To help limit classroom interruptions we have decided as a building to no longer send these out.
Every night phone calls and emails go out to parents to inform them that their student has been marked absent at some point that day. If a teacher has marked a student absent in error the student will want to have their teacher sign the Absence Verification Form (which can be found either online at https://woodinville.nsd.org/resources/attendance/marked-absent-in-error or the student can stop by the Attendance Office to pick up a form) and once the form is completed the student will turn it into the Attendance Office to clear the absence.

Please note, students who leave campus early do need to sign out at the Attendance Office and the school needs to have parent permission prior to the student leaving early, otherwise the absence(s) will stay unexcused.

If there are any questions, please contact the Attendance Office at whsattendance@nsd.org or by phone at 425-408-7410.

Counseling Corner
Apps and Snacks

We had a successful Apps and Snacks event on 11/5! We will have another opportunity for seniors to get help and/or have time to work on college applications with the direct support of the WHS Counseling Team on 11/26, from 7:30 to 11:30am. Once again, students need to fill out a pre-arranged absence form (attached) with parent/guardian AND teacher signatures. And a big thank you goes to PTSA for providing the dorm style snacks!

Fun Facts:

  • Over 33% of seniors have applied
  • Over 369 transcripts have been submitted in Naviance
  • Over 211 colleges have been applied to
  • Over 746 applications are currently active

Diploma Name Verifications

Seniors: Please see Mrs. Porter in the counseling office if you have not signed off and verified the correct spelling of your name that will be printed on your diploma and commencement program.

Advisory November 13: Grade-Level Activities

During Advisory on 11/13, Counselors have planned activities based on grade levels. We will focus on the following topics with each grade level:

  • Freshman: High School Priorities and Goal Setting
  • Sophomores: High School & Beyond Planning / Naviance Lesson
  • Juniors: Preparing for Life After High School
  • Seniors:  Post-Secondary Planning, Work on College Applications or High School & Beyond Plan

First Quarter Grades
Progress Reports will be mailed out with first quarter grades. If your student has a D or F, in any of their classes, the first point of contact is the student’s teacher. End of first semester is January 23rd which still gives us plenty of time to help your student get back on track. Recommendations for raising grades:

  • frequent check-ins and communication with teacher.
  • make sure you’re checking ParentVue/StudentVue and monitoring grades.
  • schedule time to meet with your teacher before school, after school and/or during tutorial. Encourage your student to ask their teachers for a golden ticket for tutorial!
  • seek out additional support from your student’s counselor to brainstorm additional intervention strategies.
Mental Health Matters!
By Jennifer Cruze, MSW, LICSW, Mental Health Counselor with Swedish
jennifercruze@nsd.org
Lose the BUBBLE WRAP!
As a society, we’ve come to view stress as negative, doing everything we can to make it go away, wrapping ourselves and our youth in “BUBBLE WRAP” for protection. However, science shows that STRESS itself isn’t necessarily bad. In fact, experiencing and learning how to use stress is an important part of having good mental health. Check out this TedTalk by psychologist Kelly McGonigal!

Teenmentalhealth.org defines mental health as the capacity to successfully adapt to life’s circumstances. It does not mean happiness nor does it mean NOT having negative feelings, worries, or difficulties. It includes experiencing stress and using that to learn new skills and effectively address the challenges of life. This means that someone with good mental health isn’t someone who avoids or is protected from experiencing stress, but instead, someone who uses the stress they experience to learn and grow.

Before I go on, I want to define a couple terms.
  • A stressor is an EVENT that triggers the stress response in our bodies. It can be internal (like a thought) or external (like a test).
  • The stress response is our body’s SIGNAL that we need to adapt and change in order to accommodate or deal with the stressor – it can include your heart racing, palms sweating, shortness of breath, butterflies in your stomach, and more.
So what can we do?
  • Let’s change how we think about stress, and try reframing the stress response as our body getting ready to tackle the challenge in front of us. Stop using the word anxiety when what we really mean is stress response. YOU CAN BET THAT THE CAVEMEN APPRECIATED THEIR STRESS RESPONSE WHEN THEY SAW A LION APPROACHING!
  • Model or teach effective coping. This includes PROBLEM SOLVING, using SOCIAL SUPPORT, making HEALTHY CHOICES about food, exercise, and sleep, and more.
  • Using stress reduction or relaxation exercises sparingly. Our first goal should be to try to solve the problem causing the stress response. Stress reduction/relaxation exercises should be used when someone feels so overwhelmed that they cannot effectively apply problem solving/coping strategies, and should always be linked to developing or using an effective coping strategy designed to solve the problem causing the stress response.
In short, the stress response is normal and a call to action. Young people need to learn problem solving and coping skills and be given the opportunity to practice them; they should not be removed from a stressful situation before they’ve had a chance to use their coping skills. Otherwise, the next time they face the situation, it will feel even more stressful. For more info on stress, read this, this, and this. I challenge you to leave the bubble wrap at home this week!

STUDENT DELIVERIES & PHONE MESSAGE
As we head into September, please note that items brought to students necessary for their coursework during the school day must be delivered to the Main Office where they will be held for students to pick up during non-class hours. To preserve valuable classroom time the Main Office cannot send passes for students or deliver items to them, and items such as gifts, balloons, and flowers must remain in the Main Office until the end of the school day.

Please take care of communications regarding appointments, etc. at home and make any arrangements for early dismissals in advance or in the morning through the Attendance Office, as personal phone messages for students cannot be delivered to classrooms unless they are an emergency.

Your understanding is appreciated.
