Olympics Recap: Blue Devils Earn Medals

Several Blue Devils earned medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris! Chelsea Gray and the U.S. Women's National Team secured their 61st straight victory and Olympic record eighth consecutive gold medal as the United States defeated France 67-66, earning Gray her second Olympic gold medal. Women's basketball head coach Kara Lawson served as an assistant coach for the USWNT, also earning her second Olympic gold medal. In men's basketball, Jayson Tatum helped Team USA earn its second gold medal. Morgan Pearson, who spent one year at Duke, helped the US Triathalon team win silver in the mixed relay.

Enabling Realistic Digital Twins for Complex Geometries

A new grant awarded to a Duke-Cambridge research team attacks the challenges of creating digital twins of geometrically complex systems. A digital twin is a concept where complex machines and systems are represented virtually in real-time with real-world input and adjustments. Guglielmo Scovazzi, professor of civil and environmental engineering at Duke, is looking to apply a workaround solution his lab recently invented to the challenge in which essentially creates a standardized 3D grid of computational cells and molds a shape to be inserted into it and takes out the computational cells cut by the shape.

Girls Exploring Math Helps Empower Future Researchers

Duke's Girls Exploring Math (GEM) is an initiative that seeks to foster a community for young students interested in math that can help empower them to pursue careers in research and STEM. The GEM program includes Saturday math enrichment workshops that are focused on encouraging its participants to explore math. At these workshops, they deal with challenging puzzles to build problem-solving skills and engage with math outside of the standard school curriculum.
