MLK JR CONFERENCE

On January 25 Prep students participated in an annual forum that honors the work of Martin Luther King Jr. and others who fought for justice and civil rights. We take this opportunity each year to bring to Prep community members who provide services and/or who have expertise in areas related to service, justice, and diversity. Jim Leonard says it well; "We create a school within a school for a day."

Upper School students attended two of fourteen presentations by volunteers from the Santa Fe community on topics including "Homeless Youth,"  "Immigration," "Public Health," and "Mutual Obligations for Justice & Equality,” among others. Two-hundred fifteen Upper School students registered online and selected their preferred topics, and we did our best to make sure every student was placed in two of their five choices. Middle School students particapated in two conferences, "Food Justice" and "Human Rights/Freedom of Speech".

Some of the comments from students (and video clips below):

"This session completely opened my eyes! I was moved to tears and will never forget this. It made me think that for my graduation I want to have people send money to the food bank instead of giving me gifts. Thank you for sharing this information." (Food Justice)

"I think acknowledging the fact that many of us (maybe subconsciously), participate in the negative feedback loop of judgement and slander was profound and it was important to discuss ways to disengage from and prevent this."
(Slander and Hate Among Girls)

"One particular moment that sticks out to me is all the variables that take part in the change of climate.  I also found it interesting that we have studied climate change since the 1800's." (Disproportionate Societal Impact of Climate Change)

"I liked this presentation because it was more than just about nuclear weapons. It was about morals, human reactions, and rationality. (Nuclear Challenges for Generation Possible)

It was a fantastic experience hearing from agencies and organizations in the Santa Fe community about the work they do to meet the needs of our community and beyond. We thank the many presenters who shared their experience and knowledge. Essential to discussions was an understanding that not everyone may agree with any or all of the issues presented, and that the goal was to deepen our collective awareness of social justice issues.

A special shout out to Prep parent and documentary filmmaker Jody Schiliro for providing a clip from her recently completed documentary film, "The Obama Years: The Power of Words." The documentary will air beginning February 27 on the Smithsonian Channel.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Geo Bee Winner!

A trumpet appears on the quarter of which state known for its jazz music heritage-Louisiana or Pennsylvania? Nine Middle School students answered questions such as this for the annual National Geographic Geography Bee. This is the 29th year the National Geographic Society has held the Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools around the country.

Congratulations to eighth grader Ben Johnson, who won the school competition this year by answering the following question correctly: Colombia, with low coastal plains along both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, borders which Central American country? Ben advances to the next level of competition, a qualifying test to determine state competitors. He is eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $50,000 college scholarship, at the national championship in Washington, D.C. Go Ben!
ATHLETIC NEWS

Santa Fe Prep hosted District 1 Swim Championships at the Genoveva Chazez Communtiy Center over the weekend. It was a fantastic meet featuring some amazing performances by our Blue Griffin Athletes.

In unprecedented fashion, the Boys finished in 2nd place, and the Girls just 11 points out of 3rd place
the highest combined finish in school history! There were many individual highlights as well. To name a few of our district champs: Riley Kinlaw '18 took 1st place in the 100-meter Breastroke, Jordan Kinlaw '19 took 1st in the 200-meter Individual Medley, and the Freestyle Relay Team (including Riley Kinlaw '18, Jordan Kinlaw '19, Reed Kellam '19 and Cyprus Hyunga '18) won the 4x200 Relay. We wish the team the best in the upcoming State Championship in Albuquerque, February 17-18! Congratulations and a huge thank you to Coach Dave Caldwell, Assistant Coach Tove Shere, and "Diving Master" Jim Weyhrauch for putting on such an exceptional event!
The Upper School Basketball Teams are currently in the thick of district play. The Girls Team picked up a nice win against Desert Academy early last week and despite their stellar efforts lost to McCurdy and Dulce later in the week. The team resumes play tonight against Monte del Sol at 5:00 pm at Christian Life, and on Saturday, February 11, they travel to McCurdy for a shot at redemption against the Bobcats! The Boys Team is still recovering from some key injuries, and despite losing their opening matches, is looking to find new chemistry this week against Monte del Sol tonight at 6:30 pm at Christian Life. Come cheer the team on as they host McCurdy this Saturday, February 11. JV plays at 5:00 pm, followed by Varsity at 6:30 pm in the Prep Gym.
The Boys Middle School Basketball Team continues to play well with a highlight this last Thursday of an overtime victory at Pecos! They continue their season this week traveling to Sandia Prep on Wednesday, February 8, followed by a home game on Friday, February 10 against 21st Century. Go Blue Griffins!

CITIZEN'S CLIMATE LOBBY TAP
A big thank you to prep parent Wendy Odai for her leadership in creating a Santa Fe Prep Chapter of the Citizen's Climate Lobby (CCL) through our TAP programThe CCL is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots advocacy organization focused on national policies to address climate change.
The TAP's main objectives are to grow youth leadership for climate action and to
draft a Memorial for  introduction in the 2017 NM State Legislative session.
The group has been working with a few members of the Legislative Council Services for the Memorial and students have practiced their CCL talking points several times now at the Roundhouse, improving each time!

The students have also been working on their advocacy training and learning to work as a team when lobbying for a Carbon Fee/Dividend.
Next steps involve filing a final draft of the Memorial (students have already met with New Mexico Representatives and Senators to solicit support); testifying at the Roundhouse as expert witnesses when the Memorial is introduced; and speaking at Capital High in Feb/March when the Environmental Science Classes study climate change to hopefully inspire other students to get involved.
