Gender: Four Faculty Give Their Take

What do four female NYU Shanghai faculty think about gender in academia? We asked Visiting Associate Professor of Psychology Katie Aafjes-van Doorn, Assistant Professor of History Heather Ruth Lee, Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations Tanya Tian Yuan, and Assistant Professor of Philosophy Yuan Yuan, to share their experiences.

• Congratulations to Director of NYU Shanghai's Center for Global Asia and Professor of History Tansen Sen who was awarded membership in the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) at Princeton for the 2024-25 academic year. The award will allow Sen to complete his book manuscript on the Ming dynasty admiral Zheng He entitled Zheng He in Indian Ocean History, Culture, and Politics. Founded in 1930, IAS allows members to undertake uninterrupted curiosity-driven research among a community of scholars in connection with one of the world's foremost centers for intellectual inquiry.

• A delegation of 26 young scholars from the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania visited NYU Shanghai on March 4. The visit was arranged as part of their study trip themed "Infrastructure and Urban Renaissance" to explore different aspects of China's urbanization through a series of guest lectures and site visits. The Shanghai Key Laboratory of Urban Design and Urban Science (LOUD), along with Chancellor Tong Shijun and Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen, received the group and shared the lab's research on urban studies with the students.

• The Center for Career Development's 2024 I AM LIMITLESS conference featured Limitless Industry Discovery Channel hosted by five industry interest groups. An NYU Wagner alumna shared her experience establishing a prominent presence within the dynamic NPO (non-profit organization) industry. Students gained insight into the field of auditory healthcare and got a peek behind the scenes at a lab during a company visit to ORKA Technology Group.

Chinese Language Lecturer Gu Beilei took her Shanghai Architecture for Chinese Language students on a field trip to the Xujiahui Library and the Tou-se-we Museum, dedicated to the arts and crafts of the former Tou-se-we Orphanage, established in 1864.

Think AI is smarter than your baby? Think again

A new NYU study shows infants perform better than artificial intelligence in identifying what motivates other people. "Putting infants and AI head-to-head…is allowing researchers to better describe infants' intuitive knowledge…and suggest ways of integrating that knowledge into AI," said Psychology Assistant Professor Moira Dillon.
