Family News and Information
November 2019
A warm hello from “The Hill” to our Denison Family! Please enjoy this news and information for our family members.
Break Housing for Upcoming University Recesses
University break times are approaching! Here are some important reminders to consider when making travel plans:
  • Residence halls close at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 23, and re-open on Sunday, December 1, at 9 a.m.
  • To remain on campus, students must complete a Thanksgiving Break Housing Application via the MyHousing portal.
  • The deadline to submit a break housing application is Friday, November 8, at noon. Applications received after the deadline may not be accepted.
Please note: We are unable to accommodate delayed departures or early arrivals back to campus. Break housing is designed for students who require housing for the entire break period. Please work to secure off-campus housing accommodations if your student's travel plans include arrival back to central Ohio before halls open.
For Winter Break, students should plan to depart 24 hours after their last exam. Residence halls close at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 20. Residence halls reopen at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2020. Students requiring Winter Break Housing will apply in their MyHousing portal. The winter break housing application will be available Monday, December 2, and is due Friday, December 13, at noon.
For more information, contact Denison Housing at housing@denison.edu.
Airport Transportation
For students who need to get to and from John Glenn Columbus International Airport around break time, the university partners with SHARE for shuttle service, for a fee. Your student can sign-up for a SHARE timeslot.
Suggested Reading for Family Members
This fall, a collective group of faculty and staff have been reading The Stressed Years of Their Lives: Helping Your Kid Survive and Thrive During Their College Years, a 2019 book by Dr. B. Janet Hibbs and Dr. Anthony Rostain.
It is recommended to family members who want to explore the challenges and stressors for a young person navigating the transition to a greater sense of independence, especially when the transition has been a struggle.
About Careers
We in the Austin E. Knowlton Center for Career Exploration hope that your student is having a positive and productive semester. We’ve had a busy fall meeting one-on-one with students and hosting programs and employer/graduate school information sessions on campus. While winter break may still seem far off, we will offer a full slate of opportunities. Please encourage your student to leverage one or more.
Gain Skills — Information and skill-building on career-related topics ranging from Excel to project management to finance skills to marketing are available through OnBoard, an online platform with 60 self-paced units (available during school breaks).
Strengthen Their Network — Denison’s student and alumni/parent online network lets your student identify alumni or parents whose background or career matches their own — and then set up a phone discussion with them. You can be a part of the network, too. Please sign up here.
Experience the World of Work — Winter break is an excellent opportunity for students to job-shadow someone in a field they are considering. Your student can use the Denison student/alumni network to identify a potential host!
Check Out Potential Employers — With First Look, we plan to offer 2 or 3 half/full-day trips to employers in cities outside of Ohio during the first two weeks of January. See details in the Knowlton Note!
Prepare to Launch — We will offer Boot Camp, an accelerated program during the last two days of winter break (January 16-17, 2020) for seniors and juniors.
As a reminder, family members can get connected to the Knowlton Center as well!
Summer Scholars Program
Each summer, through the Lisska Center for Scholarly Engagement, more than 120 Denison students receive stipends to conduct an independent or collaborative project (available for all disciplines) under the guidance of a Denison faculty member in our acclaimed Summer Scholars Program.
Denison Summer Scholars receive a stipend ($4,000 in 2019) and a campus housing allowance. Students may study on campus for 10 weeks, or off campus in places like India, Denmark, Sri Lanka, Spain, Argentina, Chile, and elsewhere to conduct research. Off-Campus awards provide additional funds for travel expenses.
Early Experience awards offer current first-year students (rising sophomores) a chance to conduct a shorter and less intensive project (five to six weeks). First-year students can also apply for regular 10-week awards.
Interested students should seek a faculty mentor and work closely with that professor to develop a compelling proposal. Your student can contact Cookie Sunkle, assistant to the director of the Lisska Center for Scholarly Engagement, for assistance. The application deadline is January 30, 2020.
Financial Wellness for Students
Denison’s Financial Wellness Office provides education and services to help your student manage money and acquire skills to achieve financial independence. Students learn how to budget and save, how to manage credit and personal finances in college and beyond, and ultimately how to live without their parents’ financial support.
Workshops are offered on a variety of topics, and speakers talk about topics like credit, banking, and taxes, to name just a few.
One-on-one coaching with Financial Wellness Coordinator Samantha Smith is available to all students. These are self-guided, private conversations, whether the student is having a financial emergency or just wanting to work on a life skill such as structured budgeting or learning more about credit cards.
Denison Wellness Newsletter
All Denison students receive the college’s monthly wellness newsletter. If you wish to receive the newsletter, too, please complete this sign-up form.
