Ecumenical Ash Wednesday Service
Wednesday, February 18, Noon, Cannon Chapel and Livestream
All are invited to an Ash Wednesday Service to begin Lent with prayers, scripture, and the imposition of ashes. Reflection by The Rev. Dr. Brett Opalinski, Candler School of Theology Assistant Dean for Methodist Studies. A simple soup lunch will follow.
Service hosted by Emory Christian Chaplain, The Rev. Maddie Herlong, and Candler Associate Dean for Worship and Spiritual Formation, The Rev. Dr. Khalia Williams, with musical meditations provided by University Chaplaincy Music Director, Mr. Maury Allums.

Wedneday, February 18, 2026 - Thursday, April 2, 2026
For Christians, the season of Lent is a season of fasting and preparing our hearts for Holy Week, culminating in Easter. Lent began as a season of preparation for those who would be baptized as Christians on Easter. Through prayer and fasting, they prepared both their body and soul for the sacrament of baptism. Today, we follow in this tradition by fasting or taking on a spiritual practice from Ash Wednesday through Good Friday. These 40 days (not counting the Sundays) are a time to repent and turn our hearts to God. I invite you to consider a spiritual practice for this season. Above are some examples of practices and some resources for you.

Ramadan Weeknight Iftars
The Muslim month of Ramadan will span February 18 through March 19, 2026. During this time, Emory Muslim students, faculty, and staff will be observing with daily fasting from dawn through the sunlight hours and nightly iftar communal prayers and dinner. On Atlanta campus, Emory University Muslim Life will hold weeknight Ramadan Iftars in Cannon Chapel with fast-breaking, call to prayer, prayers, and a halal buffet dinner.
Emory Muslim students, faculty, and staff do not need to register, but guests should register by emailing Emory Muslim Chaplain Ustadh Dr. Rahimjon Abdugafurov. Co-sponsored with university leaders, Emory schools, student organizations, and other partners. Location changes will be shared on the Emory Muslim Life elist. Students on a meal plan who like suhur bags should register here.

Emory University Chaplaincy Recieves Zero-Waste Ramadan Grant from Georgia Interfaith Power and Light
Emory University Chaplaincy is excited to announce that we were awarded of a Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL) Zero-Waste Ramadan Grant. As a recipient of the grant, Georgia Interfaith Power and Light will provide Emory University with compostable plates, utensils, and takeaway containers for four of our iftars. Muslim Call to Prayer: Islamic Awareness Month and Ramadan
Fridays, February 6-March 20, 1:45 p.m., Cox Hall Carillon
The Emory Muslim community celebrates the month of February as Islam Awareness Month and, by longstanding tradition, the Muslim call to prayer (adhan) is played on Fridays after the 1:45 p.m. chimes from the Cox Hall carillon during the month of February and during Ramadan. This call to prayer announces the time for Jumu'ah prayers, the weekly communal Muslim prayer held on Fridays at 1:55 p.m. in Cannon Chapel.

Hindu and Catholic, Priest and Scholar: A Love Story

Join us for a lunchtime book talk with Fr. Francis X. Clooney of Harvard Divinity School as he discusses his journey and new book Hindu and Catholic, Priest and Scholar: A Love Story. Drawing on his decades of work across Hindu and Christian traditions, Clooney reflects on his personal faith, interreligious study, and immersive engagement with the Hindu tradition as a Jesuit priest.
The conversation will invite us to consider how scholarship, faith, and relationships can mutually deepen each other rather than compete, and how interreligious engagement can be both intellectually serious and spiritually meaningful. Lunch will be provided.

WISE Interfaith Pre-Orientation:
Peer Mentor Applications Open Now for Undergraduate Students
Application Deadline: Sunday, February 22, 2026
Interested in engaging with diverse spiritual traditions? Looking to have deep conversations and build strong connections? Apply to be a WISE Peer Mentor and guide first-year students in a five-day interfaith pre-orientation program designed to build deep community and engage with a multitude of spiritual communities at Emory and in Atlanta. We welcome applications from all religious, non-religious, spiritual, and ethical identities.
Peer Mentors receive a $600 stipend, enjoy free delicious meals, and early move-in.
During the program, participants will:
- Explore Atlanta and the Emory campus through visits to vibrant religious and philosophical
communities and service and social justice organizations
- Grow your religious and philosophical literacy skills by experiencing different spiritual practices and meeting leaders from different backgrounds
- Build leadership skills through workshops and small-group discussions
- Connect with other students and build long-lasting friendships
- Enjoy fun activities such as outdoor barbeques, campus scavenger hunts, and more

Emory University Chaplaincy Recap: MindfulEmory Faculty and Staff Retreat
On Friday, February 6, 2026, the Emory University Chaplaincy hosted the first MindfulEmory faculty and staff retreat in Cannon Chapel for over 30 Emory faculty and staff members. The event featured: a welcome by Emory Buddhist Chaplain Venerable Priya Rakkhit Sraman; an opening compassion meditation by Compassion Center colleague Michelle Liberman; yoga led by Vidhi Tiwary C27; an awe walk led by Emory Psychology Professor Andrew Kazama; a sound bath led by Malinie Feeney; a journaling practice led by Emory Jewish Chaplain Rabbi Jordan Braunig; labyrinth walking and making with Emory Christian Chaplain The Rev. Maddie Herlong; a collective grief discussion with FSAP colleagues Dr. Mellonie Mullins and Denesha Chambers, LPC; and finally a vegan lunch where participants were invited to share a silent mindful eating practice. Thank you to all who made this retreat possible and we look forward to providing similar opportunities in the future.

On Saturday, February 7, 2026, Emory University Chaplaincy staff and students attended the Georgia Interfaith Power and Light (GIPL) Green Team Summit. This summit invited Green Teams, faith leaders, and environmental activists to "dig deep and let justice grow." The event was hosted at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church. The University Chaplaincy had a table at the event and also attended conference keynotes and break-out sessions.

Wat Lao Buddha Khanti Retreat
Saturday, February 21, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Wat Lao Buddha Khanti (4052 Zoar Church Rd SW Snellville, GA 30039)
A one-day retreat is being held at the Wat Lao Buddha Khanti temple on February 21. The beautiful temple was built by the local Laotian community where it acts as a space for Buddhist practice and monk residency. The renowned Huong Dao monks leading the walk for peace recently visited the Wat Lao temple during their passage through Georgia to help spread awareness of their message. Now, the temple is hosting a camp that brings the community together through meditation, Dharma learning, discussion, and mindful games. Attendance is free, but $25 donations are encouraged to help support the temple. Transportation will also be provided to Emory students, but registration is required and can be done here. You are welcome to join as a participant and/or as a volunteer.

Candler Foundry: Death Cafe

The event is called a “Death Cafe.” A Death Cafe is a space to gather, share beverages and cake, and engage in an open-agenda discussion about mortality, life, and death. In American culture, not exempting educational communities, death is often a taboo. Through this event, we hope to break the cultural ice and give people an opportunity to communally reckon with death as a concept. Grappling with death, as it turns out, enriches one’s capacity to find purpose in life regardless of one’s religious tradition.
This model of discussion is not unique to us but rather was developed by the broader Death Cafe movement. See here.

Candler School of Theology: World Christianity through Middle Eastern Eyes and Experience
Wednesday, February 25, 11:00 am-1:00 pm, RARB 252
Sponsored by Candler’s World Christianity program, this event will feature Mitri Raheb, founder and president of Dar al-Kalima University, Bethlehem. Raheb’s presentation will cover World Christianity from Middle Eastern perspectives and experiences, building on decolonial theory and his extensive work as Palestinian liberation theologian identifying several critical issues that are underrepresented in World Christianity scholarship today. Among other things, he plans to explore the treatment of geography as neutral rather than as contested theological space as well as the reproduction of Western Islamophobic narratives that distort fourteen centuries of Christian-Muslim coexistence in West Asia.
Raheb’s presentation will be followed by short presentations by Reyhan Durmaz, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and Deanna F. Womack, associate professor of history of religions and interfaith studies at Candler.

Performing Foxtrots from Auschwitz-Birkenau

Patricia Hall (Professor Emerita, University of Michigan) has been researching manuscripts at the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum for the last nine years and was interviewed on the PBS NewsHour. Performances of the Music from Auschwitz manuscripts took place in January 2025 for International Holocaust Remembrance Day at Wigmore Hall, London, Music of Remembrance, Seattle, and at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum. New York Insight Meditation Center: Living An Ethic of Love – Celebrating Black Dharma Teachings

This February, New York Insight invites you to explore that legacy through a month-long series of Black dharma teachings, offered as a daily practice of reflection, resilience, and connection.
Each weekday throughout February, participants will receive an email with a prerecorded dharma talk from a Black dharma teacher. These teachings are designed to meet you where you are, offering insight and grounding in daily life. All talks remain accessible for at least one year, allowing you to engage at your own pace. Hillel at Emory: Perspectives Trip

The Perspectives Trip is a 10-day immersive experience for students wanting to learn more about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. The purpose of this trip is to give students of all backgrounds and religions an opportunity to engage with the region's beauty, complexity, and culture in a personal way.
This is a completely subsidized program that includes international airfare, accommodations, 2 meals per day, and all activities and transportation. We are specifically looking for sophomores and juniors who hold leadership roles on campus and have the openness and willingness to learn.

Touching the Earth Retreat

It is an amazing opportunity for those interested in reconnecting with nature and fostering contemplation and community. Summer Study Abroad: The Tibetan Mind/Body Sciences Program
Deadline: February 13, 2026
The Tibetan Mind/Body Sciences program in India is a five-week long study abroad opportunity that brings together the best of both western science and the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Participants meet leading spiritual teachers of the Tibetan tradition, often including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and engage in the ongoing dialogue between Tibetan Buddhism and modern science. Course work includes the study of Tibetan culture, Tibetan medicine, Buddhist philosophy, contemplative practice, and secular ethics. Students also have direct interaction with Tibetan monks and nuns studying neuroscience, biology, and physics. Learn more here.

Avodah: Jewish Service Corps

The Jewish Service Corps is an immersive service year program running September 2025 - August 2026 for emerging changemakers ages 21-26. Participants spend a year serving full-time at a non-profit in Chicago, New Orleans, New York, or Washington, DC while living and learning in a justice-oriented, pluralistic Jewish community. Corps Members are placed full-time at leading nonprofits and contribute to our partners’ work on crucial justice issues. Corps Members are supported in their work by robust programming that allows participants to explore different visions for movements for justice, the role of community in building a more just world, and how they want to show up as Jewish people in justice work. United Methodist Higher Education Foundation Scholarships Available

Students are invited to apply for scholarships from the United Methodist Higher Education Foundation to help fund the 2026-2027 academic year. Eagle Food Pantry and Donations
The Eagle Food Pantry is a free food pantry for Emory University Students housed at Bread Coffeehouse. We are open Fridays from 9 am-5 pm during the semester and can be found at 1227 Clifton Rd. Students can visit the pantry as many times as needed and there is no food limit.
Donations can be made through our Amazon wishlist, our website, or dropped off at Bread Monday-Thursday 12-5 pm. Our most desired items are pasta, pasta sauce, oatmeal packets, peanut butter, jelly, granola bars, fruit cups, canned beans, canned veggies, and canned soup. Monday-Friday starting January 20, Noon-2 p.m., AMUC 125
Emory University Chaplaincy chaplains are available Monday through Friday from approximately Noon-2 pm during term in AMUC Suite 125 to offer pastoral care and have meetings with students, faculty, and staff. The general schedule is below and may vary semester to semester.

In Orthodox churches, the first day of Lent marks the beginning of the Great Fast, the final six weeks of a 10-week period leading up to Holy Week and Easter (Pascha). In the churches that follow the Gregorian calendar, Lent is a six-week observance (40 days excluding Sundays) beginning with Ash Wednesday and culminating in Holy Week. It is a time of repentance and sacrifice in preparation for Easter.
