National Civility Month
August marks National Civility Month, a time to celebrate and recognize the importance of civil behavior in our communities. Civility encourages harmony, empathy, and kindness and paves the way for more positive connections personally and professionally. Learn more about our 2024 SHU Reads! August is National Black Business Month

Get involved on campus with student organizations such as SHU Women in Business, The Women's Network, Building more Leaders in Minorities, National Council of Negro Women (Imani Chapter), the Entrepreneurship Club and many others.

International Youth Day
August 12 is International Youth Day, to give young adults a platform to exchange information, knowledge, and resources.

Women’s Equality Day
August 26 marks the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibits states and the federal government from preventing women from voting. Women gained the right to vote in the year 1920. The first official Women’s Equality Day was celebrated in 1972.

Seton Hall Night at Yankee Stadium
August 21
Seton Hall Night at Yankee Stadium is back this year with some exciting additions exclusive to alumni. For the first time, all ticket holders will receive a classic New York Yankees pinstripe jersey co-branded with the Seton Hall Pirate logo.

Visit the Campus Inclusion American Exhibit celebrating summer events, holidays [July 4, Labor Day] national pride and the best of the USA. August 7 is National Purple Heart Day which honors and remembers current and former U.S. Armed Forces members who were wounded or killed in action. It also commemorates the day in 1782 when General George Washington established the Purple Heart, the oldest military medal in the United States. Summer Hours for Campus Inclusion are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Learn more at Campus Inclusion and Community Center (University Center, Room 209; open Monday - Friday from noon - 5 p.m.)

August is the month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In Catholic thought and devotion Mary's heart represents the complete and deepest self-giving of our humanity to love for God.

August 6 is the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Pope Benedict XVI described the Transfiguration as revealing ‘the splendor of Truth and Love.’ In the Transfiguration, we are invited to meditate on the ‘mystery of God’s light,’ Jesus’s divinity, and our role as children of the light.

August 15 is the Assumption of Blessed Virgin Mary, which commemorates the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into heaven at the end of her earthly life, a belief and observance shared by the Catholic and Orthodox Churches.

- August 23: International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. This date is the anniversary of the uprising in Santo Domingo (today Haiti and the Dominican Republic) that initiated the Caribbean's abolition of slavery.

August 26: Women's Equality Day, commemorating the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that gave women the right to vote.

- August 13 is Obon, a Japanese Buddhist festival to honor and commemorate the spirits of one’s ancestors.
- Rakhi, which is also referred to as Raksha Bandhan, is celebrated on August 19 and is a Hindu Indian festival recognizing the bonds of love between brothers and sisters.

On August 3, brace yourself for an upgraded experience, fresh merch, new sponsors, and a mind-blowing headliner alongside other fantastic acts! The event will take place at Memorial Park.

Movies in the Park
On August 3 at Bordon Park, there will be a free screening of Trolls Band along with a dj dance party and food trucks.

National Night Out
On August 6, this annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. This year will feature giveaways, a DJ, inflatables, displays of public safety equipment and a showing of the movie Migration.
